I posted on another thread that I purchased some boxes at a stamp show. For the $25 dollars I spent I certainly got my money back and then some.

Here's some of what I found:

For some of the varieties of the 1 cent Franklin, re-cuts are listed.

I have a Scott Specialized Catalogue, but I'm still unsure as to determine if a stamp has been re-cut. Is there a good reference that explains this?
I'm hoping to determine which varieties these are step by step and post my conclusions. However, I need a little more information than just Scott's to feel I'm able to do this.

Thanks,
Jon

A good reference to check would be "The Micarelli Identification Guide to U.S. Stamps; Regular Issues 1847 - 1934". This book has some good verbal discussion as well as enlarged diagrams of the the varieties of this issue. Good luck.

The imperforate look to be recut. Even though the photo is blurry, there is a section at top center that shows the outer curved line is slightly darker over the "POST" of POSTAGE. That is what would identify it as recut. So, if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me, that would make it a Scott #9 type IV.

You can also check www.1847USA.com and www.theswedishtiger.com for more details on the 1cent Franklin issue. I believe the second has/had links to sites with greater detail of this popular issue.

General issue carrier stamp. It appears to be #LO6.

It always is I now start off by assuming that any stamp I have a question on is the most common variety, and then need to disprove it.

Marty, Thanks for the links I go on 1847USA.com a lot, but have never seen the Swedish tiger site. What a great site! Now I understand what is meant by a re-cut. It's a cut on a section of the edge not the whole edge itself. It definitely looks like a #9

After reading your reply, I noticed a similar cut on the bottom between the C and the E in cents.

Thank you all for your help,
Jon

The other Franklin I'm pretty positive is a #24.
