I was just looking through a Scott book and hadn't really paid any attention to the Postage Due ones before...I think they're very interesting. I looked through this forum and didn't see a whole lot of posts about them...does anyone collect them? If so, why did you decide to collect those? Just to complete "everything US" or a more specific reason? Anyone feel like posting links or photos of their collections? I'd love to see them!

Thanks!

Good topic, BW... nice postage dues, Dianne...

A few words on U.S. Postage Dues...

I do collect them as part of my general U.S. collectin. Be very careful with identifying the early claret and brown colours. They come in a host of shades. Over time, used stamps of this vinage are sometimes difficult to colour-shade identify, as exposure to light, the type of water they were soaked in, etc., can have an effect on the colour of the stamp.

Dianne: Very nice! I really like these for some reason...something about the simplicity and the monetary look of the design, but in red, is very interesting to me.

David: Thanks for the info on color identification! I knew about the varieties, but didn't know enough/hadn't seen enough to know how that might work. I'll definitely be careful if I do get into them, especially in the older dates.

I enjoy adding Postage Dues to my General US collection. I also like the Special Handling stamps for their simplicity as well. I haven't adding any new ones to my collection for a few years, I'll have to check and see what I actual have in my album.

I like postage dues becaue they are so completely utilitarian. No butterflies or dead heroes

Also, I find some inherent comedy in postage dues -- "Hi John, amother letter from your girlfriend, but she didn't put a stamp on this one. 3 cents to read it, buddy."

As David said the early ones can be very difficult to identify. With the numerous shades and sub-shades they can be quite frustrating. I remember years ago seeing an exhibit of them. I was floored by the number of sub-shades on some of these. Many were in use for a prolonged period of time. Hence, there were many printings. so always buy with caution!

and the ultimate insult,
he pays the due, opens the letter to find she is leaving him for the bass player.
