Two ducks are swimming on a lake, one duck turns to the other and says "quack, quack" the other replies "I was going to say that!"
US ˝˘ Stamp Overprinted "Postage Due"
Bertram W. H. Poole, Los Angeles, recently showed me a copy of the 1922-26 ˝˘ Nathan Hale overprinted diagonally in one line, in black, "POSTAGE DUE."
Mr. Poole found a few of the stamps in a lot purchased from the estate of a San Franciscan, who had been in the postal service, also a number of covers showing the stamps used to collect a fee of ˝˘.
He believes it may have been a provisional, hastily made up and pressed into service by the postmaster of San Francisco for a short time just prior to the issue of the regular postage due stamp of that denomination.
Postmasters are frequently called upon to exercise their ingenuity and improvise a makeshift when rates change and there are no special stamps available.

"Do you collect postage due? Why?" Dad collected them, therefore I collect them. I feel pretty much like he did... If you collect stamps, you should collect ANY stamp that comes your way. The only reason I shrink away from 'world' stamps is to keep Dad's collection a 'reasonable' size. I think he felt the same. |

Just found a box of U.S. Postage Dues. (All given to me, or they'd wind up in a dumpster.) Based on a spreadsheet inventory, the count is over 5300 stamps. Does that make me a collector or accumulator?
Most are original gum, never hinged. Many are in block format (a few plate blocks). All have been postmarked as used (with original gum) ... which leads into my specific question: Did the post office simply postmark U.S. postage dues to represent payment of amounts due on parcels and just did not affix the stamps to the envelope(s) in question? Would there be any other valid reason for so many used postage dues with original gum? |
