Thanks for checking.

The M.JC is mark that has been reported on Bavarian area items, but the origin is still unknown. This is the first time I've seen it in red. I'm pretty sure it's the same, even though the color is different.

I suspect it is a collector mark, rather than an expertizer mark.

Is it normal to have expertizer marks on the front of the cover instead of the back?

Hi t360, I had posted this awhile back and checked some but have not come up with a name yet. Might want to check, it is more for stamp expertizing and owner marks on stamps but a great information site.

Stamp expertizing marks.
http://www.filatelia.fi/experts/

Took another look and did find MJC listed under unidentifed in Bavaria as KHJ stated before.

An excellent site! However, it looks like the expertizer marks section hasn't really been updated in a while. Everybody wants the modern certificates now.

In my experience, expertizer marks or owners initials are usually found on the back of the cover.

Thanks for letting me know, t360. I had never seen one on the front of a cover, but since I don't collect covers, I figured I hadn't really seen that many covers to generalize.

Here is a cover sent 5 years later in 1867 from New Orleans to Nantes, France
with Scott #76 Thomas Jefferson in the brown color.

Beautiful piece of postal history. Tom does seem to have a knack for finding great covers! Maybe it's because he's selectve!

Your blessed Tom

Good one mate and

great covers to boot,

If I could get my hot little hand on one I would be happy
but I can never find them in that condition.

Yes thanks Tom the weather's been mixed here with a few days of high dry heat and a few days of rain then a few days of high humidity, followed by a few more days of rain followed by a few day of cool,
then the weather repeats it's self and starts all over again.
