So, I have a clump of "mint" stamps, which had been stored for a long time in a glassine envelop, stuck together. About 12 or 15 stamps. I was able to free a couple of them by gently flexing the clump, but that doesn't work any more.

What would be the best way to separate these? A sweat box?

Thanks for your help here,

-Larry

The time that I encountered that problem I didn't know any better and soaked them apart and so ruined the mint aspect of the stamps.

I had read here somewhere something about freezing the stamps, not sure if that applies here.

Hi Larry.......

You could try freezing them.

Another option would be stamp lift fluid......found at Subway....

Yes, freezing but be sure stamps are inside a container, close the lid securely to seal it, and ensure that it is very very dry inside that container, otherwise you get ice together with the freezing, which happened to me on my first try. dried it 5 minutes under a hot noon sun, before freezing, then shake container to make it loose, that should be ok

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately I got a lot of freezing to do. In addition to stamps suck in the handmade albums I got from my grandfather, there is a large volume of stamps, neatly tucked away in glassine, and unfortunately a high percentage are clumped together. I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

Continue some gentle flexing for about two minutes. If this does not help, you will have to use one of the aforementioned options.

Just send them to David G in Canada. He'll put them next to the window in his stamp room. The -25 degree temperatures outside will do the freezing for you. He'll send them back to you the next time the dog sled post comes by.

If they are not valuable stamps I would just go ahead and soak them. I had the same problem and the flexing caused some of the ink to be pulled from the front of the stamp and stuck to the stamp on top. They were then damaged and not tradable as for as I was concerned. At least if they are soaked you should be able able to trade them.
