I have recently received some stamps from my Father and don't know much about them. I collected as a kid but took up coins instead.Could someone tell me the age and value of the following stamps please.I need to know if they are worth keeping or what. Thanks.

Nice ellipsoid-shaped numeral cancels on a couple there. (I like numbers.)

They are all in pretty good sahpe, a few not so well centered though.

I believe most are common stamps (a lot of them printed so not woth much).

I think the second one is more valuable than the others but the USA stamps are not my field. Need a catalogue also.

Welcome! Thanks for dropping in.

The 2c Washington with the vertical lines may be a "silent precancel".
We need to know the thickness of the line the distance between lines, both in mm.
If confirmed that would be a nice fine.

Warrehouse. Are you meaning the thickness and distance between the cancel lines or the lines in the stamp itself. As in the paper that it is printed on.Thanks.

half,

When warrehouse says a precancel that means the black lines printed over the stamp.

The stamps from that era were only one colour (this one is rosey reddish kinda) and the precancels are straight lines (or mostly straight) printed vertically or horizontally across the stamps, a lot of times, later on, with the name of the city between the bars.

Canada (which I am more familiar with) has silent (no name between the bars) cancels but horizontal, so I didn't even clue in on the vertical ones. First time I have seen them on any stamp. Thanks!

So, the vertical black lines, the width (thickness) of the lines themselves, and the measurement between the lines.

What you are mentioning would be the paper itself, the wove or laid type of paper the stamp is printed on. Sometimes envelopes from that period or before have lines in the paper that make a difference also.

The cancel lines on the stamp look to be 3 1/2 mm apart and 1/2 mm wide. I don't have a caliper but using a ruler from a kids school bag. haha. Thanks folks.

halfwitty, when scanning change the resolution setting to 72 DPI (dots per inch) for refular pics. makes things go faster and takes less file space (size of file is smaller).

For more detailed scans of stamps, trying to see tiny details, use a larger scan resolution.

72 DPI is sufficient for web display, but not for printing (different media).

I (re)learned this from KirkS on here. It works very well.

halfwitty, I'm at work now, but later I'll run those numbers through my "Silent Precancel Cataloge" and I'll let you know what I come up with.
