Has anyone seen this before, and if so do you have any info re value and collectability? I assume it's General Winfield Scott

Jubilee:

Yup, good ole "Fuss & Feathers" himself. Captured at the Battle of Queenston Heights by the British Army & the Canadian Militia, he was released a year later in a prisoner-of-war exchange.

What you have is an unused patriotic envelope. Very collectible (providing it's not a re-print). If someone knows anything about this... please chime in.

David

Thanks David. It's on an auction site at a measly price, so I think I'll have a go anyway. I don't collect them at all, but if it's not a reprint (and I'd love some info on how you can tell!), I'll offer it for re-sale.

Hey David, I didnt know Winfield Scott was your guest for a while..looks like he went through a lot of vittles and they were happy to exchange him...most of us know him from the war with Mexico..so the old boy had a long military career...war of 1812 to the Mexican war !!

jubilee......

One thing you could do, once you have it in hand, is to compare the paper to other covers from the same time period.....modern paper looks and feels quite different.........the colors look right from this view.

Thanks for your reply nr-notrare. I only have GB covers from this period, but the comparison should be the same. Do I take it that the reprints were done "recently"?

I agree that the colours look correct for the period. I would expect brighter paper and brighter reds and blues on a reprint.
