Recently, I have made small purchases using the delcampe website. Twice I have run into the problem that the seller does not take paypal. I then have had to move heaven and earth to pay.
Have any others here had this problem? There appears to be no problem using the payment methed called moneybooker. I do not however want to go to the trouble of transferring funds to a German bank and then paying from there.
What is the general opinion of the forum concerning delcampe?

I'm a huge fan of Delcampe. I've picked up many, many nice items at excellent prices. I created a Moneybookers account, and use that for the ones that don't take Paypal. Moneybookers is easy, but it does need to have funds deposited into it, which is simple online.
The major drawback for me is that the site allows sellers to pass on Paypal fees. If that doesn't suit, don't buy!
Don't be put off. |

I suppose the alternative is to only buy from sellers who accept paypal. |

Since one of my specialty countries is Belgium, I have found DelCampe to be a gold mine for me personally. They list items there that I can never, or hardly ever anyway, find on ebay. I have found that there are a fair number that do take Paypal and I have had to use their Money Booker on a couple of occasions. There are still some DelCampe members that will take international money orders but they are few in number. My personal experience anyway. Chimo Bujutsu |

I use a visa debit card, which acts like a credit card but uses your own money. |

I have bought a few items off of Delcampe but not enough to give anyone a balanced opinion really. I had no problems but I just bought from people who had PayPal or actually I sent cash once for a small amount. Not as regulated as ebay but that is where PayPal and perhaps Moneybookers come in with their protection schemes for the buyer. Not sure how they work on Delcampe though. It always seemed to me to be a matter of using your own common sense and if it seemed too good to be true then it was too good to be true. Spock and others, I buy and sell (mostly buy) but I do watch other sellers to learn and pick up tips etc. I have noticed that the ones who have the lowest shipping charges sell the most. I am not completely sure how to make the low shipping charges happen and still cover one's expenses regarding fees and supplies and such, to say nothing of time, but I think it must have something to do with where the sellers get their stamps to ship with or actually ship their items from perhaps also (work?). But this kind of thing would be hard to do in the long term so I think that it all comes down to buy cheap and sell dear (or, for a lot more). I have read on ebay Canada forums about selling for at least 3 times as much as you buy for or 4 times or even more. I think, like any business, long term planning in mind here again, that you have to have planned this all out to make a good go of it. Otherwise, as a stamp collector just passing on his unwanted stamps etc, I think the important thing is not to lose too much while you are doing that. Cover you expenses and then when you get that part down worry about how much you are making. Short term wise. And have fun! |

I have gotten some very good deals on delcampe and even sold a few items. However, be wise as doves, since there are also huge numbers of way overpriced items as well. Shipping to the Americas is generally quite expensive as well. Fees and whatever else that could be charged was more economical than ebay. Listing was free (I haven't listed anything for well over a year though). I opened a Moneybookers account but to date have no plans to transfer funds to it; it is easy to transfer funds, as mentioned but I simply will not pay the $25.00 international transfer fee. There are many more sellers accepting PayPal than in years past now that Delcampe has some kind of relationship with PayPal. I do have a few Euros cash that I have used for purchases I make from sellers who will accept cash. But someday I suspect cash might be a forbidden form of payment. |

According to a poll taken by DelCampe that is on their site under Community and the Express Polls, about 40% of folks accept PayPal and 30% MoneyBookers, but that was a year ago, so things may have moved around a bit here and there in the time gone by.
Sellers seem aware of both PayPal and MoneyBookers and alternate means of payment also as some do only accept one or the other but a lot do accept both, which is smart, as you can attract more buyers that way.
The times I have bought on DelCampe I have used PayPal (and cash) and the PayPal seemed to be in touch with the DelCampe Wallet and everything went smoothly, no hang ups or bumps in the road. |

When I went to sign up for an account at Delcampe, I got the idea / impression that the %of sales charged was significantly higher than ebay. Is that the case or merely a misconception. I'm still looking for the best way to start auctioning off some of my "finds." |

Delcampe is A LOT cheaper than ebay. No listing fees unless you want a special service. Delcampe's commission is 5.5% per month if your monthly sales are $750 or less per month. They drop if you sell more. ebay's is now 9.something % plus listing fees. You can list an item on Delcampe again and again is you want. |
