Very nice, Phil, thanks for sharing. I don't think I have that one yet.
Considering how little they had to work with on the margins, they did a good job of centering it.

Hi Philb. Concessioni Governative stamps are Federal Tax stamps normally found on documents of government Grants, Permits, or Franchises. Atti Amministrativi (Administrative Acts) is an expression I have seen used on first-half century documents to denote federal government issue - i.e. applicable in all regions and provinces. Hope this helps and welcome to the wonderful world of Italian Revenues and Fiscals.

I hope I can make it; should be fun. I am fascinated by the two Portuguese companies that administered Mozambique (Moz. Co. and Nyassa Co.) and I always manage to find something interesting at the big shows.

When my wife and I retired 15 years ago, we decided to sell our house and just rent an apartment - no responsibility, no work. My stamping thus went down from one room and one finished basement of shelving units to one bookcase of binders and one closet of boxes. I am therefore limiting my stamp collecting to stamps, no envelopes, no covers, no pieces, just stamps in three ring binders: close to 100 of them. Having said that, I must admit that I still get an itch and a drool when I see three or four Compahnia de Moçambique on a clean, hand-addressed envelope. But you know how it is, if you buy one, you buy two, if you buy two, ...... So I resist and stick to stamps.

Well, first of all try not to be too much of a sentimentalist when making decisions to downsize. That was the hardest part because every stamp and every envelope reflected a moment of my past, and no one truly can watch bits and pieces of one's past disappear and not wax sentimental. Then I contacted our local health services and asked for a referral to the Ontario Kids Hospital. Once I made that contact and had a long chat, boxes started leaving our house in quantities. I then contacted our local Humane Society (we have been contributing members for over 30 years) and gave them a shipload. They must have turned it around successfully because we received a very heartwarming letter from their management. Then there were foreign missions reaching kids who still think that a pencil with a "rubber" at the end is magic. Etc. etc. etc.
Giving away the first box, bag, what-have-you is hard. After that, piece of cake! Please don't misunderstand me, I am not advocating MY societies. We all have our favorites and so it should be. My wife is an artist and she gives away 3 or 4 canvasses a year because there's absolutely no wall-space left to hang more of her paintings in this joint. You should have seen her when she gave away the first canvass. Good grief, like giving a child for adoption.
Oh yes, I also went from world-wide to pre-1960 world-wide. Hope this helps.

Thanks Tony..i had a feeling that like going to a periodontist it would not be a totally pleasant experience...but I have to start somewhere..if only our SCF friends could come here and scrounge through my stuff..i remember the thrill going to Dutch Country auctions 20 years ago..rolling up my sleeves and digging in to huge box lot boxes..they went for $130 -145 dollars a box in those days..the dealers will bid more than twice that not to let a collector like me get them now days !! |

Yes, chappie near the university in Montreal had an 8.5 x 14 shirt box with ~1000 French Africa stamps hinged on old album pages. I offered him $100 blindfolded and he refused. Next time I drove down to Concordia and dropped in on him, he told me he had sold the box for $450. Believe it or not .... I tend to believe him. Crazy! Tony Vella Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. |

Tony:
When at ORAPEX 2010, stop by the Youth Booth... I run it.
Phil:
When I go down to NY (probably October 2010) with Nani, If you have not yet already done so, I'm sure my wad of US Cash will help you downsize your philatelic holdings... especially the American, Costa Rican, and Indonesian!
