Hi Everyone!

I just can't seem to decide which stamp I want as my Avitar, so I've been going thru my loose stamps (over & over) and I happened to notice this postmark that says Telephone. Does anyone have any info regarding this ?

Thanks in advance...
Kathy

No, but if you follow it, it looks as if it might say "TELEPHONE BILL."

Hi All

If this cancellation does indeed read "Telephone Bill", then my next question would have to be, was this stamp affixed to an 'invoice' or type of bill??

I can't see this being a postmark from any particular post office in India being used on regular mail? I could be wrong though.

Interesting, and I hope someone has an answer to this one.

I would suggest the strike would read something like
"Telephone Billing Dept" and a locality.
One of the larger locations maybe would have a dedicated postal
station.
Telephone billing has been privatised in India, but probably not from
1960 the time of the stamp issue.
Could we see the cover please?

It is certainly interesting.

It is always wise to check Indian postmarks, esp for the "used abroad" strikes which can be valuable.

Some others are "CANTT" for cantonment
"FOREIGN EVE" for late posted mail
EMPIRE PRESS UNION
EDUCATION
SOWCARPETT to name but a few.

Rod,
I know I've been getting a reputation as "The Cover Queen" around here but this is a loose stamp. That's right... No Cover.

The combination of trying to decide on what stamp to use as my Avatar and you turning me on to that dang Hotel Cancel has got me digging around in my loose stamps and looking closely at the cancels/postmarks in the process and that's how I came across this stamp.
