Well, the shoebox has been sitting there for almost 30 years. The daunting task I've wanted to do and been terrorized by. Am I man enough to undertake it? Started out by trying to find a HUGE shallow black plastic tray to work on watermarks with. Visited a few local stores, and nothing really struck my fancy. Some too big, some too small, too shallow, too deep, etc etc. I was poking in the frig for a snack yesterday afternoon, and spied a salad tray from JackINdabox that my son had saved. IT WAS PERFECT !! Salad went into the trash, tray into the soap and hot water, and WAALAA ! instant watermark tray. Started out with the easy stuff just to get my feet wet. Worked on 3 cent violet and light violets last evening. Nothing spectacular, all used, some hinged, some went into the trash, but, a quiet evening streatched out on the floor with a bad back, and sorted stamps. Wife is still amazed that I can recall watermarks. Sad fact is that all my reference material is either online, and the printer is crashed, or my catalog info is questionable.

Good luck! Just don't O.D. on the watermark fluid. I can handle the watermarks and the perforations. It's the dies of the 2 and 3 cent stamps that drive me crazy after some time. There's usually some sort of cancel over that vital section of the stamp you need to see. Will |

I would sort by perforation first, then watermark. Might make the job easier.

O.D.ing on the lighter fluid ? Hmmm, wife is worried that I might set my massive pile of hair on fire. She cut off my ponytail a while back, but I want it back... Yes, sorting the types should be easier in the next few weeks, going to use the flatbed scanner. Big honkin scan and scads easier on my eyes.
And I did sort by perfs back some 30? years ago. I had knee surgery circa 79/80?, and ended up with one of the old fashioned zippers across the back of my left knee. Was homebound for close to 6 weeks with my trusty Harris aluminum stamp guage. If I were to perf all of these today, I am afraid the whole box would end up on StampWants. And I still do not have an acceptable pair of tongs. I have a brother that is a doctor, he has brought me some of his surgical cast offs, but I still end up using a cheap pair of flat tweezers with rubber hose wiggled on the arms. I complain, but if I didn't the wife would question my sanity. |

Towards2112, just ask the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx, they should have the answer. |

My old dog Bytor has already clued me in. AKC Malamute. His old paws can't work the tweezers with any more finesse than I. |

Hey, wa-da-ya mean "some went into the trash"?
You're breaking my heart!
Do me a favor and put all those into an envelope with my name on it. I'll pay the postage when you get an envelope full.

Any surplus W/F's should be directed my way. My desire for them has gotten to the point that I am buying duplicates on ebay. My theory is that you just can't have enough of the W/F's |

I agree on not enough WF's. Picked up a small selection the other day, came from a great seller on Stamparama. Haven't even opened the glassine to see if anything stuck out. Some day I'll have the time to stay focused on strickly that aspect, but also, just the other evening found a pile of 1 and 2 cent US Columbus that I didn't remember I had. Found 3 cracked hats right off the bat. |
