I have these Washingtons

I was wondering what the proper term/lingo is for the ruffled type of edge on top of the 3 cent ones? Also, with them being in blocks of 4 would the value go up or would they be valued @ single x 4 ?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Lucky

Lucky, while the value of a block of stamps generally commands some kind of premium, these stamps are minimum catalog value, so single x4 would be a good rule of thumb in determining their value. Truth be told, if they had been kept on the entire wrapper, they'd be worth more as documentation of the rate they satisfied than they are as blocks of stamps by themselves.

Hope this helps,
-Allen

No special terminology as far as I know. That's just the way selvage looked back then! The ruffled or serrated edges will appear on OPPOSITE sides of the pane (i.e., if you had a corner block, one selvage would be serrated in appearance while the other selvage would be flat). It has to do with how the paper was cut into sheets from the paper roll BEFORE the stamps were printed. After the stamps were printed, then 2/4 panes would be cut from the sheet into the format sold at the post office. I believe the serrated edges are the natural edges of the paper roll.
