Don't have an image of the back, but they are OG never hinged

And no, not literally in my bare hands. This is a stamp I have wanted ever since forever, and finally found one which, to be honest, I could afford.

Great find! It's an especially nice feeling when you've been on the hunt Mr. Washington for a long time.

Yes, there was a 2cent plate with three impressions that had something wrong with them. The three impressions were burnished out and a transfer roller was to re-enter the positions. The siderographer (what a word) picked the 5 cent roller instead of the 2 cent roller. And the rest is history.

Does anyone know of any estimates of the number of errors which escaped before they were discovered? It had to be a fair number, or they would be unaffordable.

That is a very nice pair there, no doubt about it! I've always wanted a pair just like that only used on cover... I'm not sure I've ever seen one, but it must exist somewhere I would think.

I would think a pair used on cover is most unlikely. The 5c error does exist used. But was it used as a 2c stamp with the error not being noticed, or as the 5c rate. The 2 c rate at the time was for first class postage. So would the post office worker simply have separated the 5c error from the pane, not noticing it was 5c and not 2c? Same would apply to a customer who bought a pane, or multiple.

But for a pair to be used would require that a double letter rate had to be paid and the error not noticed.

It would seem to me that if the stamp went all the way through production without anyone noticing that it was 5c, then it wouldn't be that hard a stretch to think a post office worker wouldn't notice either. Of course, you're right, it would have to be a double weight cover to have the pair... I wonder if there was ever an example on cover of this 5c red being used to pay International postage?
