Well that was alot of reading lol. But definetly welcomed. As always I apreciate the info. Hopefully after reading I will be able to properly care for my stamps new and old. I kinda like the way the older ones look more then the newer flashier ones.
I found one of my foil stamps! Not sure if this is a nasa one thow. Looks like there are football players on it. I forgot to mention these are attached to the envolopes and not actually stamps. I will post pic later if the camera can pick it up. |

That's a beautiful hologram-type stamp. Wow. I have no US catalogues except at the library so cannot tell you much about anything but Canada except what I remember from years ago and recent reading. It looks to be part of an envelope but I am not sure. If it is it would be under the envelopes category in the back of the catalog somewhere. If you have a specific question about a stamp itis best to start a new thread/topic on it in the kind of proper forum. Or just start a thread to say here are my stamps or some of the, or somethng. Really anything goes as long as you keep it kind of in the correct collecting area or so. For terms and terminology on stamps I think the AskPhil site www.askphil.com is one good one. There are others around too. Phil stands for philately, the study of stamps. Precancel is a cancel on a stamp that was printed by the government usually to lessen the work involved in hand cancelling lots of envelopes. It is usually a name within bars or just bars. Other countries have them as half circles or other designs. It's a whole other field of collecting. I think they have started a special section on here just for precancels. Cancelled prior to (pre) mailing. That Canada stamp is from 1986, one of a set of four that year (earlier years had other smaller locomotives), this one being Scott Catalogue #1120, a Canadian National class U2a 4-8-4 wheel base type loco. Trains are good! Very nice Winnipeg CDS (Circular Date Stamp) postmark (also known as Circular Date Cancel CDC in some parts), clear name and date, wonderful. When you have a whole page of those CDS cancels it looks really nice. Hard to come by usually too so costs more when they are like that. |

Thanks for the quick reply and all the good info. I didnt think a stamp that has been stamped on would be considered valualbe. I thought just the oposite. I have a whole bunch of those circular ones too.
The foil is part of the envelope. Kinda like a window in the envelope and the square foil image is glued to the back. I also have the NASA one floating around somehwere. Hopefullly I can find it.
I did notice going threw the newer stamps I have that there are ones from bermuda, china, japan, netherlands, canada, argentina, india and others. |

I have been selling on ebay off and on for a few years so now everytime I look at a stamp I judge it right away as to how I would sell it, under what category or collecting interest. That foil one is definitely Space topic oriented and the train loco is train oriented naturally but the cancel is a whole different interest. Bull's Eye cancels some call them or Socked On the Nose (SON) from usage on the old British and Canadian stamps that had a King's face on them. It depends on how you want to collect. New mint stamps, used cancelled in various ways stamps, used with just a hint of a cancel on them so the design is free stamps and just everything, it doesn't matter. In some ways I like everything still, but I do know bits and pieces about this and that now and then. So I sound like an expert but am not anywhere near one in fact. I found I learned a lot just by trying to sell other people's stamps. I had to in order to do a decent job and I am still learning. It's fun. I have too much fun and don't make any money though. You can see how that bothers me no end. Hope you have fun too! |

Did you know that in Germany anyway and perhaps the Scandinavian countries as well they collect postmarks and keep the stamps on the paper so that the postmark is not cut off in it's prime so to speak. So that Norway stamp is an excellent collectible in Northern Europe. I like it too. It's like a reprint of older Norwegian stamps I remember. Look at some Iceland stamps on-paper kiloware on ebay and see how they sometimes talk about the cancels as if they were the important thing rather than the stamp itself. Quite involved it seems. Off to Canada thread . . . |

Hey I was looking in the trade section and people do random package trades. Should I try that? or is that risky? |

Gee, I didn't seven see that part. But then, I have been asleep for most of the year so far. You will have to (by the rules) wait til you have 50 posts in before you can email through SCF or trade or sell. Happens pretty quickly though, you are halfway there now. |

Well, I might, I like Canada and cancels and varieties, and many other areas of stamps too, as the mood strikes me. (and pocket book too). I will get on over to that area and 'watch' it or subscribe and see what actually goes on over there. Thanks for bringing it up! |
