I have several of these cancels?...most dated in the 1850's -1860's.Do they have any value? This one is on a poor condition cover but most I have are in really nice shape. This one dated 1861.

Eddie.....

Torn does not always mean no value.......whole covers without stamps with proper markings from the stampless period can have decnt value......"stampless covers" or "folded letter sheets".

I'll echo what others have said here, you have to look at the whole cover (both front and back), not just the cancel. If you have covers with territorial postmarks, or marks from private carriers like Wells Fargo, they are going to be valuable covers torn or not.

Hmm. The postmark is Tipton Iowa. About 30 miles from Cedar Rapids.

That kind of Civil War era stuff might be quite interesting to Iowa collectors.

Yep, I agree that the cover as a WHOLE is needed to put cancels, stamps, etc...
into context. I will also go a step further and remind you that your 'perfect'
cover with a fancy cancel might look valueable, but pale when compared to your
ragged cover with a famous name or advertising design. Don't write off any old
cover! Also, never cut them up or remove stamps.

Spock: I guess it depends on how much space you have. If I had several thousand covers, I would consider cutting some of the more common ones as I have limited space where I am right now. As it is, I have less than a thousand, so I can manage without cutting any.
