The veins from a leaf of a tree. (I wonder how they did that?)

Actually back in the 1800's this was the first form of security measures for printers. Many post bills and check draws would have a leaf design made from a real leaf to foil counterfeiters. Since this stamp is from that era it would be very possible that the original may have come from a real leaf.

If you look at some of the early US Colonial Currency printed by Ben Franklyn you will see this process. Franklyn also embedded small pieces of Mica in the paper as a security measure.
