That's an oxymoron.
AFAIK all glassine, by its very nature, is non archival.
You need to search for archival plastic or paper.

For the record:

Spock,
I had the same problem with giving advice to Ron (Penguin stamps)
It is easy to recommend the quality of a product
when it is in defect, another thing to give a product
the thumbs up.

I am not really qualified to recommend the product I use
because it is quoted as archival, I have done the beilstein test
and just cross my fingers that it is.

We have a company in Australia called very strangely BUNZL
who sell archival pockets really cheaply about a half cent each,
or 1c each IIRC.

I reckon they are the ants pants, and put all my covers in them
but they have two drawbacks, they have no "body" like glassine
and will not stand up in a shoebox, and they are extremely "slippery"
but for storing odd stamps or duplicates etc they are fine.

All this really is no use to you, as you will have to
shop around as I did.
I went to the Western Australian State Archives and annoyed them there, and they recomended the company to me.
You may have to do the same in your country.
Google is a start.

Hope this is of some help

update: prices have gone up
I found this pic I snuck when I was in the warehouse
they are 5c each, but I think the smaller pockets are cheaper
I like the size of a long cover or the size of a cigarette packet for my stamps.

well your posts have been more than helpful. I guess I dint want tothing but my archival dealer sells museum quality plastic storage options that will cost me about $2 a envelope when I am all said and done but I will go that route. its no point teying to save money and damaging my collection using glaslines especially since there is no way in hell that I can b uy those stamps again. Thanks

at 5 cents your stuff is also worth looking at. can you provide close ups?

Record collectors (and comic book collectors) are also concerned with archival storage. Bags Unlimited in upstate New York was my source for such things, back in the day when I was spending too much money on that instead of on stamps. They have lots of stuff, I expect there must be something there that's useful.

Your topic is a really difficult and tough experiment,
cost v preservation, I think most people dodge the chicane,
albeit, most dealers I see at bourses with <very> expensive
stamp examples have them on cards and behind "mylar",
so it's hard to see anything better than that.

On reflection, with your problem of high humidity,
I certainly wouldn't be going the envelope route at $2,
way too expensive, but I wouldn't be placing mint stamps
anywhere near each other in a cover either.

I would suggest your only option is/are "stock books"
If you have access to stamp clubs or auctions, you can pick them up reasonably cheaply second hand, and can get a fair amount in them
This is the cross you have to bear as a MNH collector,
hinging used stamps relieves me of that pressure. :)

Here is a very useful site in Aussie that takes on the topic of preservation with gusto.

well in the good old days when I was not retired it wasnt a problem but you are right

unfortunately I cant buy second hand stock books its harakiri for your collection if you do that here. I have solved the humidity problem after blowing a few hundred dollars on the solution of dehumidifer dedicated safes and eva dry. I have worked out the deal another $300 will get me those mylar museum grade preservation envelopes, IS plus shipping and duties so about $500 should help me get out of the mess since I have some high dollar stamps and wouldnt want to ruin them.

if I blew the money I could live with it if I blew the stamps it would affect me badly.

stamp collectors are crazy.

looks like another sale will come up shortly to gather the money for the SPS stamp protection system

spock! I have the same issue with my KGVs and found stock books were the best final storage place for them. I also use stock sheets to make my stamps safe while working with them and storage that sometimes ends up being there final storage place. I was never comfortable with envelopes, they seem to get crushed sometimes in storage for me but the cost of stock sheets can be expensive. I was lucky some time ago and got a 1000 for 6c each. They have a half page strip and 3 other strips on the other half that is why they were cheap . They are very useful as I can cut them up for different storage reasons. I can now make my stamps safe as soon as I get them as it is usually a bulk buy and the stamp that gets damaged is always the expensive one. It is just my luck with storage it is never the cheap stamp that gets damaged. That is how storage happens for me! I hope it is of some help! KGV
