I like these for the cancellations. This one was used in the Canal Zone (apparently the Canal Zone Postal Service just used the USPS forms). Or whatever the postal system was called then.

Funny one BeeSee. I see I will have to contend with quick witted repartee here.

I was referring to the US Postal system in my post. Which I guess was just "Post Office Deparment" (as opposed to USPS).

In the Zone it was the Canal Zone Postal Service.

Rod - Why did you call it an AR card? Does that stand for something? Thanks!

I'm not Rod, but AR stands for Acknowledgement of Receipt

If I may add information to my learned colleague's response,

the genesis of "AR" I believe was French and was

"Avis de Reception" or...acknowledgement of Receipt

Possibly due to rulings from the UPU, who's lingua franca was
French during the early years.

US cover marked "AR"

Thanks Jubilee and Rod!

Here is one used in the Canal Zone, but with a US cancellation (I like the airmail advert). What amazes me is that airplanes looked like that in 1928.

If you like AR, then you must Google David Handelman or visit Richard Frajola's site to view some fabulous exhibits. David's collection is truly world-class. An astonishing assortment of AR material.
