Here are a few of the earliest postmarks I've found in my "collection" so far. I've not made any attempt yet, to id them, so any help would be appreciated. (The Scotts book has yet to arrive.)
Please let me know how the scan quality is... if I need to change something.

Hello!
The postal envelope in the upper left probably has a date of 1880 unless the duplex was put together wrong and it came out 1830, but that stationery didn't exist then. The one in the lower left corner is interesting - two 1 cent bank note issues, but they may be different issues. They all have condition issues as many covers from this time period do, but the cancels are all readble. The Scott's will help you the best. Are the letters enclosed?

I have a bunch of similar ones... the top IS 1888.. that stamp and paper didn't exist in 1830.
the two 1cent blue benjamins could be interesting based on what type they are.hopefully you will be luckier then I was.

Many of the envelopes have letters - the lowest 3 do. Does it matter - ie, should I keep the correspondence with it?

Yes!! Keep all letters with the original envelopes. You can have a common stamp, common cancel, but if the letter is something interesting or from anyone of historical interest (that could be someone famous to even the town butcher)then it's worth so much more because part of history. A cover with a stamp, cancel and cover is a complete item to me and gives such a richer slice of history. Even if the letter is taking about the weather and daily life it's still a piece of original documentation that is unique.
