I'm finding a new niche, and there doesn't seem to be anything about it in the forum. Surely that can't be! So how does one find the market value for Commerative Covers?

This is a commemorative show/convention cover. There is, unfortunately, no comprehensive catalog for this type of material.

It does have a nice ArtCraft cachet (I've always loved their black and white artwork); unfortunately, there is usually no additional premium associated with ArtCraft cachets.

Stamp is a bit crooked and there appears to be a smudge on the cover at the right -- estimated RETAIL at typically 25c-$1, depending on whether you can find the "right" buyer. Keep in mind, I don't actively collect covers, so take that estimate with a grain of salt.

Thanks for posting the pic -- don't see too many inaugural convention covers.

KHJ is about right when it comes to market value. I'm processing a couple hundred of the commemorative covers and usually I start them at 25 cents to $1. A few might be worth more based on a collector's personal interest and popularity of the topic on the cachet, cancel and/or stamp, but overall the demand is low compared to postal history.

Here's are two odd commemorative covers I've come across recently:

Do folks make cachets ahead of time for such events like the first cover? The second cover is a bit weird especially with the quote about Jackie.

Thanks for sharing. Did you, or anyone other than me, notice the commingling of The National Convention of Stamp Clubs with the National Capital Sesquisentenial?

I'm sure it's happened, but usually not. A bit morbid to create a cachet ahead of someone's death, but I imagine a few artists/companies have done so without saying so.

A more common scenario is for special event cachet makers to first get canceled "blank" covers, and then draw or print the cachet afterwards. That reduces the loss due to messed up cancels or damage.

Nice covers, thanks for posting the pics!

Yes, their inaugural national convention was in Washington DC, in the year of the Capital Sesquicentennial.

However, I don't know if the choice of location/time was a happy coincidence they noticed, or planned from the beginning. Maybe some philatelic history buffs will know.
