This morning I took out an envelope of pre-1960 DDR someone sent me last week and started getting ready to catalogue them when I suddenly realized that I didn't feel like it. I thought that perhaps DDR wasn't terribly interesting so I took out my Portugal and Colonies Ceres collection which normally gets me going but within 5 minutes I was fed up and I put everything away. I tried to get rolling one more time this afternoon but no dice; couldn't even get myself to the next room to fetch an album.
This is the first time this has happened to me (with regards to stamps) and also the first time I have found myself considering giving away or selling all my stamps and sticking to my writing - one hobby is more than enough for a 66 year old.
Has anyone else here had a similar experience or is it just me? I would sincerely love opinions or ramblings or rants. Thanks in advance.

Nope, not me. My wife, many many many times, yes. But not me. The things I do for philately... k |

I went through that about 10 years ago, coincidentally it was also when trying to sort hordes of DDR. For some reason, I just couldn't get enthused. I put it all away for a couple of weeks, built a deck on the house, then happily returned to stamps. I never could explain the funk...it just happened, and I'm glad it went away.
My name is Peter and I am a stamp collector.

I have had that feeling a couple of times but it usually lasts about 1 day. I usually just get bored. Doing the same ol thing for the 1000th time. I always go back and when I do it's usually with some vigor. I always go back though. |

I put things away for over 20 years and never thought about stamps until one day I read in the paper Great Britian was issuing a Beatles stamp set & I, being a fan thought, thats neat, and ordered the set from the British Post. They send me a quarterly mailing and soon after I discover that a Harry Potter set is being issued and my daughter being a fan I ordered those. Then I pulled out my old US collection and saw the cool little pieces of paper and all the holes that needed filling and all the great times I had as a kid filling those holes and I haven't looked back since. Like you Craig, I'm a stampaholic (again). Just took something to spark that passion again. |

I think that most of us have a moment where the stamps are not as appealing or get the collecting juices flowing. As the saying goes "Too much of anything can be a bad thing." Of course, the best thing about stamps is that they can wait for you to come back to them just where you left them. |

The longest I have lasted when I was in one of the moods was around 3 years. I put all of my stamps up and did not touch them. I pulled them out and it was a whole new hobby to me. |

The history of my collecting has consisted of fits of starting and stopping. Somtimes only marginal interest. I always kept the stamps, though, and was always glad for what I had been able to accomplish in the past. The stamp bug bit me hard earlier this year, and I am very actively collecting now. |

I am annoyed that Khj made that offer. I saw your post about 1 minute after you posted it, and thought the same thing. But being somewhat new to the group I refrained. Now, however, if you do give it away, I call first dibs. :) |

I've had that feeling and actually did give away a major chunk of my collection to folks. I collected US for many years, eventually got fed up with the quantity being produced and subsequently just quit collecting it. I actually took my collection a local dealer to see what he might be interested in - I was actually just looking for face value (or thereabouts). he showed zero interest so I used a big chunk for postage and gave away bigger chunks to folks.
and in all seriousness, I am looking to start collecting Germany as my son now lives there

I think it would be abnormal if you didn't have the funk every once in awhile. Would be kind of scary to see someone spending 5 hours a day every day on a certain activity.
The key is to go with the flow and not force anything! |
