Okay here is what I know.. Perf 12 vert./horiz. this was on a cover canceled Feb. 15. 1897 from New York This fits all the signs of a 279B but the date is too early. the earliest documented use of the 279Bf which is what this look like is Nov. 18, 1897. I need to check the watermark to be sure I guess, if it has a dbl line wmk.. then scott is gonna have to revise their catalog, on earliest use.. I compared this to my 279Bf type IV and all the information I have. It fits a type IV on every level.. This one has me puzzled..

Actually, I'm not convinced it's a Type IV. But that is a different issue. This stamp and the info you provided is very interesting. You said it was on cover. Did you soak it off yourself; do you still have the cover; or were you given this information by someone else? [EDIT: removed paragraph regarding possible reperforation] Thanks in advance for answering my questions. k |

It was on a cover I have, it came off by itself when I was handling the cover.. I am posting an image of the cover and stamp, you can see that the stamp aligns perfectly with the cancel. It is just moved because it is loose. |

Thanks for the reply. It just looks strange. For instance, in the cover picture, the stamp isn't aligned with the original postmark on the envelope. Both the stamp and the cover seem "strange". Thanks for posting the cover pic! k |

yeah they are not aligned because the stamp came loose (fell off) Ah, OK, that explains it. Unfortunately, Scott will not recognize it as EKU unless the stamp is still tied on cover or the date postmark is on the stamp. I also retract what I said about possible reperforation. I was thinking in terms of coil stamps. It's too early in the morning for me. |

Also, the right side of the T is tear-drop shaped. By the way, an EXCELLENT high resolution scan. Makes examining the picture so much easier! k |

You are welcome! It takes a lot of patience to ID the W-F. I gave up long ago. I admire your patience and diligence. |
