Hi Puzzler,

Thank you for the explanation. This stamp look like an antique stamp and that's why I like this one especially. If there is alteration... it is normal because it is an old and used stamp. That's the important for me.

Thank you!

Hi,

Another one is beautiful too... a Jefferson 1 cent. Obliteration look like a morse code or something like that. I don't know why but I prefer stamp with something special... like this one. I know... i'm a newbie :)

Thank you!

What you say is very true for me also.
I enjoy used stamps and covers or lettres as they were used and it is the history and what people did years ago and how they did what they did.

The cancellation (cancel) on your stamp is called a duplex cancel because it has two parts. The left hand circle with the place and date and time where the letter was posted. (Circular Date Stamp Cancel or CDS or CDC)

The right hand obliterator or killer part of the duplex (the oval shape with bars) was designed to obliterate the stamp so it could not be reused again. It would obliterate the value of the stamp.

There are many versions of these. The newer ones in the USA are wavey lines, the ones in Canada are the extra ))))))))) at the end of the two or three-line sprayed-on ink-jet date/time/place cancel.

I have become fascinated lately by cancels in different shapes from France and Belgium and England. Hexagons (6-sided), octagons (8-sided) and rossettes. then there are the Railway Post Offices (RPO) and Travelling Post Offices (TPO) and others from canada, the US and England.

Especially around the time period and before when your stamp was used, they always cancelled the envelope when it passed through a different Post Office, so you can track where the envelope went.

Some people collect cancels on stamps and pieces of paper and covers.

hey cdnum, I'm a newbie at certain cancels too. I collected stamps for years and years and did not pay attention to the cancels.

I think everyone is drawn to certain details or aspects of stamps that appeal to them, and as the time goes by, they learn more and are drawn to new to them areas of stamp collecting.

It is all good.

Hi,

Another one is Lincoln with "OYE" just in front face... I like this one because it is like Lincoln want to say something "Listen to me...". OYE (maybe more significant in french... :)

Thank you!

Congrats, cdnum. You have the right slant on this great hobby. You are doing what you like and what fascinates you, at least at the moment, and that is great and healthy. Sometimes we collectors get too carried away with the more sophisticated aspects of philately and forget that there are much simpler pleasures to be achieved and appreciated.

cdnum, welcome to the forum. The 4c Lincoln is most likely a precanceled stamp which means the city from which it was mailed canceled the stamp with the name of the town or city before attaching it to the envelope. The OYE is actually part of GROVE which is part of the town name that appears to be in the state of MI.

Hi,

Another old one I like. It seem to be off centered.

Thank you for your comment.
