Does anyone have imaging (or can point me towards a reference) to demonstrate the black shading in the otherwise all brown Jefferson 5c from 1863? Much thanks...

The term black brown is a single shade. It doesn't mean that a part of the stamp is brown and another part is black. If you look at the scans from the swedish tiger site, you'll see what I mean. The black brown is a single shade of the ink. |

Yikes...what does one do when one sees a dealer selling suspect stamps? Quite possibly this dealer is just passing along things they bought, without changing descriptions, etc, or they are just not very good at identifying stamps (as opposed to suggesting that they are flat out trying to defraud some unsuspecting collector). Still, do you report this to ebay or the APS or somesuch (or just keep your money in your waqllet and go about your day?). |

well, doesn't look like seller is trying to defraud,, though his description if "looks unused" maybe accurate.. But for a stamp seller it would be a poor way to sell a stamp.. I would just ignore it.. I did send him an email through ebay, letting him know the stamp had an obvious pen cancel.. let's see if he changes his description or amends it.. also, it looks to me, in my un professional opinion that is has been reperfed. |

I'm really glad that I brought this up here, as it is a learning experience and wake-up call. I've been bidding on these sorts of things on ebay for the past several weeks (not buying any super high price items, but more entry level stuff). Still, maybe it's time to stop spending on potentially bogus items, even if they seem a bargain, and just find a few reputable dealers that I can develop some trust in... |

I never said the seller had a bogus item... I don't want to be quoted as saying that.. he could have made a mistake or maybe thought it was unused or could be anything.. I am NOT a stamp expert.. so don't take what I say as gospel. I just point out things that I see. You need to make your own decisions. Buyer beware and all that stuff. Before you buy a stamp do your homework.. |

I hadn't meant to suggest that you were saying this guy is selling bogus stuff, or that anyone is saying this.
One of the obvious pitfalls of trading in relative anonymity on-line...
(Most of the better sellers that I have come across offer free returns, in any case) |

The stamp in question has definitely been pen-canceled and has definitely been reperfed. You do not have to be professional to state that. If a seller is stating "looks unused" on a stamp like that, I definitely wouldn't bother with that seller any more unless I wanted more practice. So far, it looks like the seller's descriptions are not reliable. My opinion. Even taking scanning artifacts/inaccuracies into account, both stamps are #76, not #76a. There is a very distinct color difference between brown and black brown; these are not two colors that are easily messed up by a scanner. k |

Yes, Stampvirgin, it was good of you to point those out prior to any purchase. Quote: listings have been removed... I believe the listings are still there. At least when I click on the link, it still shows the auctions are active. |

you are right they are still for sale...
interestingly... looking at buying and selling habits.. looks like the seller is buying stamps to resell on line..
Wasn't there a whole big deal about that.. some people were selling to one guy then that guy was altering the stamps to sell them as something else?
