Can anyone point out a good resource for learning the lingo of stamp collecting? For example, what's a a "socked on the nose" postmark?

Welcome to the forum kibosh!

Socked-on-the-nose (SOTN) - a stamp with a clear postmark in the dead center of the stamp

1847usa has an excellent glossary of stamp collecting terms. Just click on the first letter of the term you are looking for (located below the banner).

A socked-on-the-nose postmark is a postmark that shows the date the stamp was canceled with the postmark just about dead center on the stamp.

Had this go up just in time to see ol' quick-draw t360 beat me to it!

Gotcha. Thanks for the replies!

Is SOTN good, bad, or a matter of taste?

Taste, but if clear they seem to be favored.

Just happened to be scanning some postal cards and came across this one. The president of Saar got it on the nose, here.

Just wondering if the term socked-on-the-nose didn't originate back at the time most stamps had faces -- and noses -- on them...
