I see it. Thanks khj. Neat flaw. Wish my library had a Scott specialized and also a SG Commonwealth catalog too.

Perhaps a scan of an regular (without a flaw) stamp would be of use?

WOW, I'm too new for that kind of detail, I'm still learning how to identify different countries stamps.

heck, I'm even steering clear of the early American stamps for now because of all differences in the Scott catalog got me confused on what I had.

Gaff, oops, Edwin,

It is good to do what is pleasing and understandable while collecting.

Once you are comfortable with whatever it is you are currently working away on, and it may be years for that to happen (it is all good) then, when you see someone who is familiar with and can explain about some new aspect of collecting, is it time to pursue that area.

I was happy for many, many years collecting world wide, and now am down sized to certain areas of interest, but am always also looking for interesting new stuff. And some of that stuff is stuff I had ignored before. I have got rid of stamps I now wish I still had. Ah well, can't know the future. keeps life interesting.

Nice find! Once more, the site below had the answer for me (before I took time reading this entire post).

http://www.1847usa.com/Glossary/GlossaryB.htm

Anyone have a link to info on the C variations? Don't see them mentioned in Scott Specialized.

I have three 231s, but looks like my hats are intact and my C's are all open.

Don't think I can help with the broken C but here is the "perfect" stamp...with broken cap underneath.

OK, now I'm insanely jealous (not that I wasn't insane beforehand).

Everybody seems to have everything I don't have!

But, enjoying every single pic!

Can't believe how interesting the topics are.

I may have a cover with a closed 'C'. Don't mean to hijack athe thread or anything - just adding to the frickus and frey!

Thanks!

that doesn't appear to be a closed c form the image..
I believe that in order for it to qualify, part of the gap in the "C" actually has to be closed.. see examples above..
can you post a higher res image?

I agree. The little black gap you see in the 'C' is really there - it isn't fully closed - but almost.

I guess I was looking at bfranton's example of a broken cap just above our posts. The example on her stamp shows a very wide gap in the 'C'. Since the closing of the 'C' was a progressive thing, I guess the question was - how closed is closed?

Or how much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck has no wood, etc. etc.
