What Do People Really Think Of Magyar Posta?

Seriously. I have tons of stamps from this country, the only ones I like are the actually postally used. not the CTO's so much.
It seems like this country is one of the biggest producers of stamps for the collectors..

What do you all think?

As young person I thought that that was the country where they invented CTOs.

Hungarian stamps along with Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia and a few other "Eastern Bloc" nations have produced oodles of colorful topicals. However, most if not all these stamps were availible within their home country and can be found postally used. I've seen quite a few of them used on cover, epecially the Polish ones. Also in many cases the stamps do reflect something about the history, culture, politics, or nature of the country. In those regards I respect them better than Disney stamps of the Gredines of St. Vincent, Princess Diana stamps (insert name of African country here) or X-men stamps of Mongolia. The East European countries just mass produced them as CTOs for packet makers to earn some hard currency since their own currency at the time was worth little over squat. That said, I have a #10 envelope box for each one of those countries packed solid - bulk auction coming some day.

I've always enjoyed Hungarian stamp designs and I get lots of pleasure from them even when they're CTO.

Personally, Being of Magyar decent, I LOVE the Country. The CTO's of the 50's-80's not so much.

rev.. I was kinda joking about with the title. If I had them in an album, which I do, I would have to know where they came from. :)

I am not sure about these. I am trying to limit my collection to postally legit stamps. And I do have a bunch that were used, but more that are CTO or Unused.

Same for Mongolia and some others.. It just seems a shame to split them up by removing the "sell to the collector to make money stamps" from the real ones.

Hey, I believe the highest face value stamp is from Hungary.

Its face value was 500,000 trillion pengos (i.e. the US trillion) or 500,000 billion pengos (i.e. the old European billion = a million million) or 500,000,000,000,000,000 pengos or if you like 50,000,000,000,000,000,000 fillér

I never really gave it any thought until I saw your post. That prompted me to pull the #6 3/4 envelope marked Hungary from its resting place and sift through the 100 or so stamps in it.

These are some of the more interesting in the bunch and, while I'm not too sure, I think they are from the early 1900s.










If anyone can identify them for me I'd appreciate the help.

I will admit a prejudice which I acquired very early on in my stamp collecting. I recognized a pattern in the stamps I had. Some of them had what seemed like normal use cancellations, and some had these dainty, pristine cancellations that almost looked like they were printed onto the stamp. I saw stamps like these as lower quality. I am in the midst of changing my opinion.

The Hungarian stamps are attractive and I know enough about the country that know I have a lot left to learn about it's history and culture.
