I finally started going through the US stuff I had from my Dad. Unfortunately nothing really old enough to be of much value, but I have a few cool looking ones in there.

I found a lot of Stock Transfer Tax stamps, but this one is pretty cool looking and I couldn't find in Scott. Is anyone familiar with it?

As for the Motor Vehicle Tax stamp I think that is pretty cool. Is it of any value though?

There is a catalogue for state revenues, but I don't have it. k pointed out this website a while back...

I guess there are valuable examples, but I have no idea if yours would be one of them. I've seen glassines with a dozen or two mixed NY revenues being offered for pretty low money.

I actually have that Motor Vehicles stamp in yellow as well. It is a year older than the purple one, 1944, versus 1945, The yellow though has a big serial number going vertically on the right side of it. Anyway, many thanks to everyone who helped to ID these.

I also have 4 of these raised (embossed) looking stamps. One of them is a green 2 cents GW stamps, which is either U70 or U71 type. It seems there are a lot of variations though, a few valuable and most not. Then I have one carmine colored 2 cents U89 and a couple of the Mount Vernon U95 type. Again, I don't think any of these are worth anything much, but I am wondering if it is worth spending more time to at least identify the U70/U71 issue?

Also, can you guys kindly help ID a few more here?

Wow, thanks Revstampman. The US is really so expansive compared to all other countries in their different types of stamp issues. It could take someone new to it all like me forever to find these on my own. Thanks again. Looks like R257 is worth a worth more than a few pennies at least. Cheers. Marc

By the way, that looks like handwriting on the stamp. There are other stamps in Scott which look like they have handwriting on them too. On R257 in Scott there is something that says "Cut Cancellation". Is that maybe what this handwriting is? In that case it has almost no value.

By the way, I have 3 stamps, 1 each; A166, A167, and A168 type, and each with an overprint that says either New York NY or Newark NJ on them. Are these worth anything with the overprints on them or should I just stuff them back in the envelopes they came from?

R173, RD16, R257 Are all canceled. It was required to deface the stamp when used. The first 2 ware canceled with a stamp of the companies name and date. The third was canceled by signing across the face. A "Punch cancel" is when a piece of the stamp was "punched out" like with a hole punch. "Cut cancel"(or CC) is with razor cut's in it. Punch and Cut are both considerd Cut Cancelled.

Happy Hunting!

Sounds like you have a few precancels. A precancel can add a premium to a stamp. would need to see them in order to look them up.
