Is this a rare or strange type of cancel? It has the number 25 down the bottom.

G'day Nutmeg,
this is an US "Duplex" cancellation
(a two section cancel Circular Date Stamp and "killer No25")

Yours is the first ever I have seen with "25"

I have examples of 1,2,4,6,11,14,19, mute,"P" and "RMS"

example of nought (belonging to a member here)
I refer to the barred section as a "footprint" style

Here is an example of an 8 barred "4"
Others here may confirm, but I think the number just refers to
the cancelling station along the counter of the Post Office,
but I am not sure.

Rod222, You're right, it's a cancelling station number. The larger the post office, the more cancelling stations, the higher the numbers you can find. There are two major types of Duplex postmarks - Barrel Duplex that you see in Rod's 1st pic and the Ovate Bar Duplex that's in Rod's 2nd pic. Each one is a steel handstamp usually used at larger post offices, but some can be found at smaller or short lived post offices which can be a challenge to find.

Londonbus1,
Yep I posted the old fashioned way by typing between the brackets. I just pulled 3 more of this type of cancel out of my collection. I will try to post them late tonight or tomorrow.
One of them is pretty impressive I think.

Rod222,
Thanks for the more detailed information. Thanks again to both of you guys.
I recently bought a collection of stamps for $50 at a yard sale. Also still going through a smaller collection I bought for $25 at Brimfield, MA antiques week.
It is a long process sorting and trying to attribute them. This forum is great!

Thanks Battlestamps!
nice to get confirmation of a rumour :)
If memory serves, I recall James Mackay quoting in one of his books
the longest counter (in the UK only) was around 600 feet long.

Yeah I kind of like that 5 but the bottom perforations are weak.
Here is another I think looks like a zero but half of it is cut off.
If it isn't a zero please tell me.

No, not a zero, it is 1892 "C"
(it's upside down)
(never seen that one before either)

Thanks for sharing nutmeg!

Postmarks are totally interesting!

I still can not understand why used stamp are not more
expensive than unused stamps!

Thanks. I kind of thought it looked like a C. By the way, all these come from a collection I purchased at a yard sale. The old lady [now deceased] had a huge collection. I bought just the USA part of it which was a classic album for $50.
But then the daughter came out of the house with a large box of "extras" she threw into the deal. I am still going through the extras and there are some amazing finds just all shoved into glassine envelopes unlabeled.
