I'm not exactly comfortable on this side of the fence, but I've mentioned my interest in collecting coins to a few acquaintances. As you might understand, this made me an immediate authority on all things collectible, stamps among them.

As a result, a friend wandered over to my place the other night, and placed this (along with the rest of the series C1-C6 and a few others) under my lens:

All of them are pristine, original gum and untouched since new. Even I had a clue that this group was something cool; what I don't know is just how cool it is. Can someone enlighten me?

They're pretty cool... yes.

I'm fond of my C6, as seen by my avatar...

Not so cool, though, that you can't get a sense of what they sell for by watching ebay auctions (ie there are probably several up for sale right now). You could watch auctions there to get a sense of what they sell for or check on Stamp2go.com (they are all up for sale there as well). If you want to get a warm feeling, you can look up catalog values in Scott, but the values there do not necessarily correlate to anything that they list for in the real world...

I've just finished my "1-6" set - I had 1-5 for ages and finally got #6.

Selling prices are all over the place, so I agree with Gaff to check SOLD prices. As with coins, the littlest flaw will drop the price.

For example, in the example you've pictured, the orange lines on the left perforations will have dealers shaking their heads. I'm not a perf expert, but the perfs on the bottom right and top right look less than desirable.

Not being a jerk here, just pointing out what has been pointed out to me in the past.

On the other hand, absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, absolutely fault-free examples, will get way beyond Scott.

The good news is that Mint, Never Hinged, well-centered examples of C1-6 (as you indicate your friend has) are definitely the ones to own if you are at all interested in maintaining or perhaps gaining value. Used examples are all over the place for the price of a Big Mac.

Thanks very much, guys - precisely what I'm looking for. The next time my friend and I cross paths I'll shoot the whole lot just to see what we've got there.

These things are tough to shoot - they won't lay flat.

And, no, he's holding, not selling.

Wellll, since he's holding, get him on board maybe we can get a 'silk purse' from this transaction after all... We'll never get him hooked if he stays in the cover.
