Hi,

Is a gray color on Washington face is cause by a canceled or it is a print error?

I think it is a non canceled stamp because gum seem to be ok.

Thank you!

Being that this has been around for 127 years, most likely a stain of some sort, maybe some spilled wine, coal dust, burnt firewood residue, grape jelly, ink, part of a block that was canceled and not adhered to the cover, etc...

Agreed, Fred. I could say it was a light cork cancel, but the "dark matter" does not appear to adhere to a particular cancellation design.

Is it the dreaded 'oxidation', which does tend to attack red and brown stamps of this vintage?

Hi,

I will be surprise if it is damage because the shape. There are some straight lines. Looking more than a reaction (like oxydation) for me. Spots cannot finish with straight lines like this.

Thank you!

Would peroxide work on this stamp as it works on Canada 3c Small Queens to clean up oxidation (sulpher)?
Curious.
