Where do you get these things, Phil? I love the "Acción de Ejercito" stamped design. It says: Argentine Antarctic; Army of Hope Base; Army Exercises.

smauggie I click on Argentine Covers on ebay and 3400 covers come up..i stay away from the Argentine dealers..they are way overpriced..i can find them from U.S. dealers for a couple of dollars..as Argentine collecting is not as popular in the States !

Nice cover Phil, very nice.

It pays to look at covers very closely.

I picked up this somewhat nondescript cover for 99c on ebay. It was described as "Australia cover 1954".

The postmark is dated 15 Feb 1954, and it's from Mawson base in Antarctica. The landing at Horseshoe Harbour took place on 13 Feb 1954, and Mawson was proclaimed the same day.

The post office opened on, you guessed it, 15 Feb! So this is a real piece of Antarctic postal history. Again, 99c!

Nice bit of detective work there Jubilee,
I wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to be very valuable.

Note behind the stamps, the clerk has pencilled in
what looks like 2/7
a common practice for clerks.

Thanks Rod. That's why I love covers. No two are the same, and Google is your friend!

If it turns out to be a valuable item, that would be nice. But, when you think of what it would have been like at Mawson on 15 Feb 1954.........

I think you may be surprised.
I would check the postage rate.
How often have you seen the 7.5d as a genuine rate on cover?

Do you follow Rod Perry? I respect the man immensely, but he is turning modern usage into an artform.

This may be genuine rate, but I have to consider this as a purely philatelic cover.

...only through magazines / auction catalogues I pick up
which are usually 2 years old.
Someone else has a "woodchip free" zone in Stamp News.
and Glen Stephens has a genuine rate cover
he challenged people to quote on, most were around $10,
the cover fetched $375 IIRC.

I don't see how you consider yours philatelic
that cover appears to me to be absolutely genuine,
there has been no care in its preparation.
