Hello Everybody!

Thought I would take a few minutes to introduce myself and give a little bit of my life story and how stamps have kind have always been in it.

I was raised around stamps, my mom and dad ran a small stamp business and I would tag along with them to all the shows they would go to. If you frequented shows in the Midwest in the 90's you may have even met them! Sadly, I think making her passion her life broke my mom. When she got out of the business(which apparently wasn't super successful) she never touched her collection of bird stamps again .

To skip more to the point, my mom passed away about three years ago and I've taken it onto myself to go through her collection. Originally my purpose was to get everything cataloged so that I could eventually sell them. After looking things up for a couple months now, I've realized I've grown to find the whole sorting thing pretty fun. Lately I've been setting a few things aside, that I just really like that I hope to hold on to, though I think most of it is just not the topic of interest for me. I'm afraid I've found an expensive new hobby though, so it'll just be the matter of deciding what I "like" I guess.

Since I haven't had a lot of "work" experience with stamps I'd like to think I have some pretty interesting questions to ask all of you. I've looked up a number of stamps that are just really puzzling to me, and I imagine some of you guys are practically geniuses in this philately stuff! I'm sure I'll learn some interesting things here, and hopefully make some new friends! Keep an eye out for some of my posts if you love trying to identify things !

Please note I'm not 13 ! I tried entering my birthday but apparently I got it wrong. I am 22. I'm trying to figure out how to change it but so far no luck .

Sorry about your mom. Hope those stamps can help you remember great memories of her too. A lot of us had experience with getting stamps from relatives close and far and some of the enjoyment of stamps comes from knowing that they came from a certain person, place or time. Or all three.

I find if I like something in stamps I keep it and after some time goes by and I've looked around at what else is available in that area of collecting I see other things that are close to it or related somehow or not even close but interesting all by themselves and I want to collect them too. It kind of grows on you in a good way, as fast and as far as you like.

Thanks for all the kind replies! I've been trying to find a particular "subject" to start collecting, but it's all so hard. I keep going back to "I'll just collect what I like!" That might be the most rewarding, but I don't think if I ever showed it to anybody else they'd get it . As far as countries go, I've found I really like Iceland (long obsession with the country itself really), Greenland (same as Iceland), and WWII stamps in general. I found a North Borneo stamp that was overprinted by the Japanese when they occupied the area and found it quite fascinating. I have a bit of an OCD style personality so it seems I always have to "complete" whatever I would collect. That makes a broad topical like "birds" kind of a scary thought. Who knows what I'll end up doing!

All collectors have a bit of the OCD side to varying degrees at different times I think.

Birds are a big topic, yes, but what about only certain region's birds, or certain bird types, and modify, expand, decrease, adapt, change as you go.

I have basic ideas I like and images and compositions and so on and this changes over time too. You learn more about something and that changes how you view it and you want to know more.

I substitute impatience with persistent action towards results. A good statement I have heard lately that rang true for me. As long as you know you are heading in generally the right direction (using your own good common sense) you will eventually arrive.
