right now I don't plan on collecting modern, however since I use modern stamps daily, I figured if I'm going to order stamps why not buy a variety of squares of 4 then I have 3 to use and one to save if I ever do decide to collect... (second hand if I'm saving them I guess I'm collecting)

anyway, with these modern stamps are those colored P1111 and V1111 the plate block # and if I'm only saving 1 stamp should I save the one with the salvage that has this P1111 number or will it not matter with only 1 stamp?

Plate numbers are usually collected in blocks [of 4 or 6] but that doesn't mean to say you have to.
I collect Flags and go after Plate Number singles of the US flags.....and there are enough to keep me amused. I keep the costs down too.

Collect how you want...that's why it's fun ! !

Plate number singles collecting is its own niche:

I like that stamp and the cartoon. Just finished building a scale model of a WWII era Willys Jeep.

Interesting project idea: building scale models of the planes on my airmail stamps...

My brother builds WWII models, tanks and planes etc. I like the dioramas that people come up with.

Wouldn't it be neat to make a diorama copying the cartoon above? Or a famous painting? Or part of?

Here is another Mauldin cartoon showing a Tiger tank I think.

As stated previously, collect any way you like, pleasing yourself is what's important. However, just keep in mind for some of the multiple design issues, you may want to modify your collecting plan if you want all of the designs in the issue.

For example, I was just looking at the recent Negro Leagues Baseball issue which has two se-tenant stamps of different design. Although all the corners have the plate number V1111, if you collect the UL or LL stamps, the plate number is next to the picture of the game design; if you collect the UR or LR stamps, the plate number is next to the Rube Foster design.

Similar situations will exist when there are blocks of different stamps of several varieties within an issue. In those cases you will have to decide if you just want the stamp with the plate number or if you want to collect it in higher multiples in order to secure each of the different designs included in that issue.

Plate numbers on modern stamps aren't very exciting, but I normally collect blocks of 4 with the numbers. I wish they'd go back to the good old days with multiple numbers. Yeah right, just like they'll go back to letting us soak off stamps with ease.
