Given the thousands of precancels out there, this is probably nothing special, but I've been trying to ascertain the name shown on this New York precancel:

First, it is definitely New York;
Second, it definitely has the ending characters of "erville"
Third, as there is no "s" before "ville" it eliminates many towns.

I scanned though the PSS Album pages for NY and the best I come up with is Garnerville, NY. Is that the answer or are there other possibles?

Garnerville, NY. This is one of the earliest Stereo electros Type 723, Letters should measure 3mm tall space between city/state should be 1.8mm. Better then average
precancel type.

Thanks for the information. If the PSS Album pages are accurate, the 723 was the only type of precancel used at Garnerville, NY.

If you ever run across a part of a name from a U.S. town, I've found this website to be very helpful:
http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp

You can use the "string search" to search on part of a name.

Hmmm, wasn't successful with "Gilme" Texas,
I used Google and came up with "Gilmer" Texas
so that's what I must have, the T not shown.

Still, a good link and saved it in my stamp links, thanks.
