I collect most of California's Redwood Empire , Humboldt & Mendocino counties, including the RPOs that ran through them. Any town or city I mention is located in one or the other. My primary sources are California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 compiled by John H. Williams & the Western Cover Society Mobil Post Office Society RPO Catalog, MPOS U. S. Route and Station Agent Catalog, and the MPOS RPO Directory and AGT Directory California Postmaster Compensation compiled by Alan H. Patera
It could be an optical illusion, but it looks like the inside surfaces of the points on those tweezers are textured, which would be common on tweezers. Tongs will typically have smooth tip surfaces.
Hi revenuecollector , a few years ago when I revved up my interest in stamp collecting I would have laughed over your hunt for "the perfect stamp tongs". But what did I know back then? Now that I have been handling thousands of stamps, I can appreciate your emphasis on the importance of the right tongs. While pulling old hinges from purchased stamps, loosening them from countless old purchased album pages, I find I'm often frustrated by the lack of grasping ability using my PRINZ SOLINGEN TONGS -- sadly, my only stamp handling tool. Me thinks it's time to purchase another tool that allows me to better remove hinges. Any favorites you might recommend (that are easily available)?
While I was working on my truck the other day, and opened up a drawer of my tool cabinet, lo and behold, I found something. A set of 5 precision tweezers that I forgot I purchased last year from PrincessAuto.com Made of stainless steel, only 4.75" long but fine ground polished finish on inside and without grips or ridges. And boy are they sharp, like darts. And the sale price was only $2.99 cdn, $2.00us, regularily $4.99cdn. Later I tried the pointed pairs, and I was able to easily manipulate the stamp with a secure hold and no damages. Cant find that number on their website but similar item with their brand name is now $8.99cdn. Similar black ones are 17.00.!
