Non Philatelic. 13y.o. Boy My hero......... Goodness knows we need good stories these days. Home alone, Escapes bushfire, by learning to drive a manual car. ("I stalled it a few times) Saves Mum's Emu. "I ran around and let the animals out, shoved the dogs in the car, didn't want mum to be too sad, so I put the emu in the car because it's hers, and then tried to work out how to drive the car," Logan said. Logan's driving experience is limited and he had never driven a manual before. "I had to grab the instruction manual out of the glove box, stalled it a lot but got it going in the end. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10...res/11609008 |

Non Philatelic : Interest piece. Question: What Australian slang term, derived from an East Midlands dialect, means "Hard Work" Answer : "Dinkum" / "Fair Dinkum" There you go "Fair Dinkum Stamps" |

I didn't know the East Midlands dialect origin, Rod222 - thank you for posting that. You prompted me to see what I could find. This page provides a good explanation of 'dinkum': http://ozwords.org/?p=6840but erroneously reports that 'dinkum' appeared in the 1890s. "Fair Dinkum" was used at least as far back as 1879 to express the current meaning of true, honest or real - a genuine go - in the description of the work of the horse 'Mabel' in this training run: It was fun to see the recent Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet set of stamps issued by Australia post Another great 'dinkum' issue was the 'Dinkum Oil- War news from Gallipoli trenches' stamp pack that included copies of the eight editions held in the Australian War Memorial. https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blo...e-dinkum-oil |

Nice work FDS......... Quote: I didn't know the East Midlands dialect origin, Rod222 - thank you for posting that. My source...This evenings TV "Think Tank" episode, a gentleman won the "Impossible Question" as I quoted above, He made a wild guess, and I thought "That's absurd!" I had fair dinkum as "genuine" None of the "Think Tank" panel could answer the question. It went to the adjudicators and they passed the answer, to wild applause. |
