Thank you Finches, A colleague turned me on to these, I have a lot of the smaller format, but the larger ones are a challenge for the wallet. I agree with you, a VERY handsome set of stamps, these Victorians. I have 2 of the 10 now. Money in the Bank with these, they will always sell. The Portrait gallery........."Formal" Perkins Bacon's engravings for the New South Wales issue of 1854, based on Levinge's designs, heralded the end of the Primitives; Humphrys was responsible for the head. The designs became more complicated as the value of the stamps increased. The One Shilling shows an unusual amount of ornament for ornament's sake, but it is a grand specimen of engraving.  This remarkable stamp, engraved by Frederick Heath, was also designed by Levinge. It was intended to resemble a silver medal, but fortunately Perkins Bacon refused both to reproduce it in silver and to print it by lithography. Although rich in detail it is one of the most 'Formal' designs ever to be issued.  British Postage Stamp Design John Easton 1943 |
