Recently a couple of threads made me think of these stamps. I though they were pretty cool and others might want to see them. Please post any WWII overprints you might have.

As I scan more I will post them.

Sharksfan, there are thousand of these. I have three full albums of overprints from Czechoslovakia, two albums from Germany and some from Austria and the rest of Europe. There is many fakes also. Your stamps are really beautiful. If you have some doubles, I would be interested. :-)

Some really nice ones there! I always was partial to the Glauchau Overprints. A difficult set to acquire! Their are a lot of forgeries of these! The same goes for The Sudetenland.

I notice the 6 and 12 pf stamps at the top have a morse code for V (di di di dah) over top of the V.

BTW, when Morse is spoken, it is not dot and dash.......it is di (dih) and dah.

That is if the character di is followed by another di or a dah .

When no character follows a di....it becomes a dit.

Examples: A= ._ (di dah) B= _... (dah di di dit) C= _._. (dah di dah dit)

Confusing? Yes; but, like most things, once you get the hang of it, nothing to it.

The Morse code for V (di di di dah) is also contained in the opening bars to Beethoven's 5th.

That music was used during World War II by the BBC as a sounder for newscasts beamed at the rest of Europe.

So, Winston Churchill's famous V formed by the first two fingers of his hand was more than just a cigar-holder.

This is the first time I've seen this overprint and the first time I knew of Germany using the V slogan.

Since German for Victory is der Sieg; it probably doesn't apply.

But, German for Triumph is Viktoria.

Interesting set of stamps in more ways than one.

Delving deeper into this topic, I found an SCF post on this from June last year which indicates the V on the German stamps was applied after the war and did mean Victory......for the allies.

Yes, That is correct. Huge amount of forgeries of these as well. If you have any let me know and I will tell you how to tell the difference.

Thanks Rod-

You probably know; but, for others: the Kiwi stamp's Morse spells health with each letter being separated with a slash.

The UK stamp's message is SOS (the international distress signal), repeatded. On this stamp is is SOSOSOS

SOS in real circumstances is sent as one word ...---... (di di di dah dah dah di di dit) .

I have to go now to my group therapy session.

It is a meeting for bores.

The organization is called Alanonononon.

This is the most I've seen on Morse Code since my 1st year in The Boy Scouts! We also learned Semaphore Flag Code as well!

It's been at least two hours, and no stamps from Rod yet...hope everything is okay...

I knew (okay, guessed at) the Morse Code on the NZ health semi-postal, but I've occasionally wondered about the other stamp in that set, which has Morse Code around the entire border. If anyone has one to post, that would be great. Otherwise I can probably dig up a scan.

C.
