I'm only new to collecting etiquettes (only have 150 or so) but something I've found is that you can't trust the sending country as being the country of origin of the etiquette. On one post card I saw recently, someone had trimmed the Southern Cross off an Australian etiquette and posted it from Europe. In another case, my brother sent me a post card picturing France from Spain (there were Spanish stamps on top) but with French stamps underneath as he was on tour and didn't get to a mail box in France (sadly, just AIRMAIL written in pen). I'd love to see more of your collection Rod, as I find it difficult to distinguish between many of the European countries (such as Austria and Germany if indeed there is any difference).

Indeed that is true, Peter,
one thing that has arisen, by the mere fact of exposing
these labels on newsgroups, is the evidence of generic
labels also.
Information comes from all quarters.
I am only a recreational collector, so I just
keep them all in one area, and if the chance comes
along later, in the form of a catalogue, then I'm half way there.

There are etiquette catalogues, but I have not seen one yet at auction.

This is probably the most common etiquette 1960's--1980's
a generic air mail sticker, printed by a private stationer
sometimes both wings are white, other time just one wing.

accuracy not guaranteed, but failrly sure these all are Aussie.

If you become a dedicated etiquette collector,
you need to be au-fait with screen capture.

When surfing the net, and you see a cover with an etiquette,
immediately do a screen capture, and name the image example "Turkey xxxxx"

That way you are "proofing the use"

I either forget most times, or don't have enough time :)
(and probably the best way to distinguish between
Austria and Germany)

That Turkey No.12 looks like it's been overprinted.

Hi Rod. Thanks for the reply. I feel like every time I read one of your replies, my knowledge in an area doubles. Thanks so much for being so willing to share your understanding so freely, and an Aussie to boot!!

These are my Aussie etiquettes to date.

My problem with this Rod is that most of the time this works, but on odd cases it can lead you astray. I have two postcards before me, one British with an Austrian (I think) etiquette, and one German with a French etiquette.

I've got a small spreadsheet which details some of the information I've collected so far. If there is some way of sharing this through the forum, please let me know and I'll post it. Additions and/or corrections are more than welcome.

..and that's where Philately begins
you have to accumulate, and as you do, your knowledge widens
then you become a "go to" man in your discipline.
You can then say this label was issued here
for this country etc etc.
As a recreational collector I don't go that far, but with
most in depth philately, you keep records, records, records
and part of the enjoyment is finding those bits of
history that has otherwise been uncovered.

Naturally, if you intend to pursue an avenue
you first want to uncover any work that has already been done
in your field. Seek out catalogs that may have been published.

Thanks Rod. It is an interesting site.

One that looks interesting too (but mainly list American ones) is
http://www.rigastamps.biz/servlet/Categories
If it comes up without etiquettes, type 'etiquettes' in the search box (without the quotes).

Hi Rodney,

Do you have any SCADTA? I might have one or two.

I just remembered, I believe I was going to send you some of the Ecuador Roosevelt stamps. I'll dig them out and 'll see if I still have the SCADTA etiquettes. I may have given them to a friend who was just starting to collect anything SCADTA.
