Is this a common postmark for Peru? I know it's pretty recent, but find it interesting that the postmark doesn't contain the year.

Check the print surface of the stamp. Strange as it may seem, Modern stamps have difficulty holding cancelling ink. "Spray on" or dotmatrix cancels on Aussie, sometimes wipe off.
You can see the ink on the stamp is lighter than the surrounding paper which hints at this.

I think you're right, it must have wiped off the stamp. Actually, it's off of a postcard so it was obviously of heavier weight than a conventional envelope. |

Hi
Ohhh! This postmark is from Machu-Picchu, the Inca's city in the Andes. Very unusual place, like Eastern Island or Antartic |

Good morning Rod,
A receptoria seems to be have been a smaller post office.
From the name, they sounds like the old British receiving houses.
Here's a long quote about the small town of Lucumba in Peru, taken from the peru-philatelic-study-circle website:
After a long discussion about the status of two small towns...
"In the 1876 census[3], Locumba had 291 inhabitants and Sitana only 125.
Around 1875, Locumba was demoted to a Receptoria and may have briefly ceased operation following the War of the Pacific.
It is again listed as a Receptoria in an 1888 listing of postal offices, but now assigned to the postal district of Moquegua.
In May of 1894 it was elevated back to a Subprincipal Office and in 1911 it becamea Principal Office of its own postal district."
The town of Soritor now has a population of about 20,000 but maybe it was a much smaller place a hundred years ago? |

Wow! A fabulous reference, thank you NSK, Noted: Soritor is unlisted. Be aware the SORITOR may be a faux postmark |

Nice references Rod and NSK. Thanks for these. It's fascinating to see all these early postmarks from Peru. I guess a "delivery office" was basically a small office that received and delivered mail but probably didn't provide other services that would have been provided by a larger office. I have only a beginner's collection of Peru and I'm afraid it has none of these interesting postmarks! |

Quote: I have only a beginner's collection of Peru and I'm afraid it has none of these interesting postmarks! Hi Nigel, I am not surprised. I have 800 Peru stamps, and just 3 early Postmarks. The catalogue only goes to 1873 But my 3, I am assuming Faux Postmarks. |
