I have always been a MNH collector and in my attempt to get into postal history and postmarks have just received my copy of " The Postal Markings of Natal" - W.R. Hart, B. A. Kantey and A.Leslie Leon.

It seems a great book but I struggle with postmarks - the numeral cancels are much easier to identify.

So anyone looking for info on Natal ask away and I might be able to help if not you can borrow the book

Drew

I find that collecting only MNH can be very expensive.

Here are a few Natals I added this week. I don't know what the marks on the Vickies represent, and if you have any insight, that'd be great. Don't spend any real time on it.

I assume the initials just say G.P.O., based on the spacing...

Can't quite make this one out...

And this one doesn't really fit here, but I might as well show it...fun with a perforator?

First One : Circular Date Stamp Type M.1. - GPO is the alternate designation for Pietermaritzburg - The index letter B is thought to be associated with a time signal (Most commonly A for Am and P for PM - but offices in Pietermaritzburg and Durban had many more different index letters because of the amount of mail sent)

The second one :

POA : Post Office Agency Canceller Type R - (50) Allocated to Post Office at Hoskens. The canceller introduced in Natal in 1890 until sometime after the union was formed in 1910.

I think that is correct I read the book front to back yesterday and found a lot of the information fascinating and will definately be on the lookout for certain cancels.

Thanks for the post Cjd. I have put the chapter list of the book on my wiki at http://www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/i...ngs_of_Natal if anyone is interested.

Fabulous...thanks. I have several glassines with used Natal, mostly Ed, some Vicki, and I've only given them a cursory glance back when purchased. They were projects for "some day" and I'll have to go through and give them a better look.
