In the link below there is a listing of these stamps, about two thirds of the way down (but not much explanation).

1931-36 inscribed Unemployment Relief
1937-39 inscribed Employment, with year overprint (like your one)
1939-58 inscribed Social Security, and year overprint

The OP's stamp is Barefoot & Hall #42, by chance the most valuable in a long string of denominations from 1d. to £4. The 1986 catalog value was £10.

OP stands for Original Post. He was referring to the original post of this thread, by Phil.

I will, but remember they are 1986 catalog values.
Left to right:

1d. == #10, £1
5/- == #18, £2.50
10s. == #34, £3.50
10/- == #66, £3.50

Thanks Doug - greatly appreciated.

Looking at sets in our local on-line auction site they seem to average about £1.10 each (e.g. Wages Tax - 1938 Employment Revenues 12 values, pen cancelled stamps starting at £14).

As usual, the basic stamps catalogue values doesn't seem to mean a lot (unless you are really desperate to buy the odd stamp from a dealer).
