There are discussions currently regarding whether if K+C had a daughter whether she would remain 1st inline should they subsequently have a son later. I personally see no reason why not is this day and age.

Once Kate Middleton marries Prince William she become Princess Catherine. Is that the "Royal C"?

Yes, it's rather unusual when Catherine becomes Kate in the shortened form.
I have a niece called Catherine and she will be very hapopy I'm sure. But no one ever calls her Kate !

I cannot see this happening. Even in this 21st Century I cannot see it.

I am all for the Royal Family but a modern one. There were some changes after Diana's tragic death, but it could be better.
After what the nation has had to endure with Charles, I feel strongly that the nation needs a younger King. So if changes are to be made, make this the one. William to be the King when the time comes.
Think about it. Charles will be nearly or even over 70 when he becomes King. William will be nearly 40. Then Charles reigns for 15-20 years, that makes William nearly 60...another old King.
The only way to stop this cycle is to change.

So I vote for change.

On a lighter note, I believe the Wedding stamps should be cartoons, and am sure Both William and Ka...sorry, Catherine would love that.
I have just seen a great cartoon for the Ist Class stamp.

A couple are watching TV. The newscaster is announcing the Royal Wedding.

Thanks to Gado.

I would think IF He becomes King!
Many Brit's and members of the Royal Family are not all that enamored with Cruella. I would think that if Diana was still alive and their was no divorce , Charles would be King already. It is my belief that HRH will never abdicate in favor of "Jughead". Instead She would rather bypass Him right to Prince William. But only time will tell!

A man after my own beliefs.

I think that when it comes time, it will be one of two things,

1. Queen Elizabeth has it in her will as her last royal edict that the title go to Prince William. Lets Prince Charles off the hook right away. I don't think he really aspired to be on the throne.

or

2. Prince Charles takes the throne, temporarily until he can then set into motion abdication. It's not the first time that has been done.

When you think about it, has anyone seen or heard rumors of stamps that were to be issued in the likeness of Prince Charles or his current wife, as King and Queen? Something like that is always leaked. Look at the information on the stamps with the wedding in the wind?

England will always give us something of a mystery.

Donna

Sounds good
Edward VIII was forced to abdicate because of his love for a commoner and a divorcee.
So what does that make Lumpilla Parky-Balls ? She was a commoner, had an affair with the future King and then divorced her husband. Then she married the future King !
Romantic isn't it ?

Londonbus1....Hypocrisy comes to mind.

I think the Royal Family has sometimes been less than royal in the eyes of the world. Hopefully, this new generation will help to repair that image. Regardless, I wish them the best, adjusting to marriage is difficult without the pressures of their stature. But it is still hard for me to get excited about this wedding. Here in the U.S. we said no to kings and queens a long time ago, now if we could figure out what to do with presidents.....

Daughters above sons to inherit the throne - no way here! Even in liberal Sweden it was only in 1980 that the firstborn became the heir irrespective of gender.

From the Swedish post site:

1980: New Successor to the Throne. On the occasion of the new Act of Succession granting female descendants the right to inherit the throne, on 26th February 1980 Posten issued postage stamps in two different denominations. Crown Princess Victoria is featured together with her father King Carl XVI Gustaf. Photo: Claes Lewenhaupt. Engraver: Czeslaw Slania. Printing method: steel-plate.

And if you want a more modern monarchy than we have in the UK, look at Spain.

Until the recent waves of Al Qaida bombings, King Juan Carlos would drive his motorbike on his own round Spain. A few years ago the BBC had a programme about the Spanish royals in which they interviewed someone who said that he had been stranded at the side of the motorway without fuel when he was picked up by a motorcyclist who took him to the nearest gas station to fill his can with fuel. It was only when the motorcyclist removed his helmet that the passenger realised he'd been helped out by the king.

Wouldn't happen in the UK in a hundred years with any our royals - mind you, which of recent US presidents would have done the same (if allowed to by their bodyguards)?

Comments so far have been interesting and amusing.

But, how do you really feel.

I'm waiting for the Australians to weigh-in.

Republican? Monarchist? both come with their own challenges,
to think that by changing one system for another will
bring a sudden peachey future shows a decided lack of insight.
Moderm Monarchy has in the main, worked reasonably well
also in a financial sense, and Queen Elizabeth has been a fine
role model for her people.
As no doubt every person on this forum, her family has suffered
from problems of poor press, bad behaviour and youthful exuberance,
they are no different, and I think it in bad taste when we take
cheap potshots just because they are public figures, I think we
forget it actually reflects poorly on us.

I wish the very best for the young couple, a young man who
has faired well, amongst the tragedy that has surrounded his life so far,
I feel as somewhat "holding my breath" for the young lass
who has a mighty challenge ahead of her, and already
the disgusting English press is circling, sniffing for blood.
That's my Australian perspective.

Whatever happens, England shall get the system she deserves,
that's why the US had two terms of Bush, and us, little johnny howard.
