This might be of interest to some...

"Today is the feast of St. Gabriel the Archangel! St. Gabriel is the patron of telecommunication workers, radio broadcasters, messengers, postal workers, clerics, diplomats and stamp collectors."

While it's wonderful to have a guardian angel who is at the apex of the order of Archangels, I have to wonder who decided we, as collectors needed Gabriel?

Are they trying to tell us we're in grave danger from our stamp albums?

Maybe it's the tongs....

Nah, has to be the watermark fluid....

Stampman,

I don't know who decided this. I thought it was a bit humorous that someone had thought of us. But then, it does tie into Gabriel's link to communications. And stamps are used to communicate by mail.

Didn't Gabriel blow a horn, according to an old song? And didn't many stamps once picture post horns?

What it means, I don't know. But you might want to remember this at some time when you find that maybe humidity is sticking down some of your stamps in ways you'd rather not see them sticking, and wonder why Gabriel didn't blow dry them for you with his horn.

As far as I know, St. Gabriel was the Archangel that comunicated Mary, that she was to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit to give birth to Jesus. For this reason, Gabriel is the patron of comunications and, hence of the post, stamps and philatelists.
On some catholic countries (like Spain), at least up to the 80's, September 29th was "The day of the stamp" and it was very popular to issue stamps and hold stam exhibitions.
