The Arrábida Bridge is an arch bridge over the Douro River that connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. It is the most downstream bridge across the Douro River, just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. The bridge, with a main span of 270 m, was the largest of any concrete-arch bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1963.
The 25th of April Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. The 2,277 m-long bridge was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999.

Pont de la Margineda is a 14th-15th century bridge spanning the Gran Valira River in Santa Coloma, Andorra. Its archstones are pumice, to keep the structure light, and the walls are made of granite. Here is an image of the Margineda bridge, designed and engraved by French artist Eve Luquet, and issued by Andorra (French Administration) on February 26, 1990, Scott No. 379, plus a photo of the bridge.

Brunel - A Lasting Legacy

Two bridges are featured in the set of six stamps commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 - 1859).
The Royal Albert Bridge is a railway bridge which spans the River Tamar in England between Plymouth, Devon and Saltash, Cornwall bank. Its unique design consists of two lenticular iron trusses with conventional plate-girder approach spans.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge and the River Avon, linking Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset. The bridge has a total length of 412 m, and the two bridge towers are 26 m above deck.

The 78 meter high, 315 meters long South Rangitikei Rail Bridge crosses the Rangitikei River in central Northern Island. The pre-stressed concrete beams of the bridge are supported by five twin-shafted piers. Energy-absorbing dampers are installed in the foundations of the piers in order to keep the bridge from collapsing during an earthquake.

Bridges bring together series

The Foot and Cycle Bridge between Schaan (Liechtenstein) and Buchs (Switzerland) was completed in 2009 for pedestrians and cyclists. The 132-meters long bridge is suspended over the Rhine on two transversely positioned steel pylons.

Denmark - Sweden Joint Issue
The Bridge Connecting Denmark and Sweden

The Řresund Bridge is a combined railway and motorway bridge across the Řresund strait between Sweden and Denmark. The bridge runs nearly 8 km from the Swedish coast to the artificial island of Peberholm in the middle of the strait. The crossing is completed by the 4 km Drogden Tunnel from Peberholm to the Danish island of Amager. The two pairs of free-standing cable-supporting towers are 204 m high and allow 57 m of head room for shipping traffic under the main span. The Drogden Tunnel is made from 20 prefabricated reinforced concrete segments interconnected in a trench dug in the seabed.

Stádlec Bridge, spanning the Vltava river, the only surviving Empire style chain bridge in Bohemia, built in 1848.


Covered wooden bridge over the Svratka river, Cernvír, built in 1718.

Centenary of the Lötschberg Railway

The Lötschberg line is a railway in Switzerland, connecting Spiez in the canton of Bern with Brig in the canton of Valais. The stamp depicts the bridge crossing the Kander Valley near Frutigen.

Bridge of Real Ferdinando over the River Garigliano was the first iron suspension bridge built in Italy, and one of the earliest in continental Europe. This bridge, which was technologically advanced for its age, was built in 1832.

Amakusa Bridges are five road bridges linking the Kyushu mainland and the Amakusa Islands. The scenic road is called the Amakusa Pearl Line, based on the products of cultured pearls.

Opening of the Main-Danube Canal

The Main–Danube Canal (also called Rhine-Main-Danube Canal) connects the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea, providing a navigable artery between the Rhine Delta and the Danube Delta. The 171 km canal was completed in 1992.
The wooden bridge (Tatzelwurm) across the canal is located near Kelheim, Barvaria. The longest wooden bridge in Europe, it is suitable for pedestrians and bicycles (and small vehicles if necessary).

Set of three, one stamp and the souvenir sheet features the Stone Bridge which crosses the Vardar River in Skopje. The current bridge, 214 meters in length, was built on Roman foundations constructed between 1451 and 1469.
