Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge was begun in January 1933 and completed in 1937. Two years later San Francisco hosted the international exposition and celebrated the completion of Golden Gate and Oakland bridges at the same tine. El Salvador issued a set of stamps for the occasion. (A postcard of that year I found on the web.)

Monks' Bridge, or Crossag - the little crossing, was built by the monks of Rushen Abbey, over the small river Silverburn, Isle of Man, in 1350. The painting by J. H. Nicholson (1911-1988), a Manx painter, was chosen for the 1975 stamp. The decorative frame is a traditional design by Nicholson. Note the Manx coat of arms.

In 2002 a painting of the Monks' Bridge was again featured on a stamp. The Manx-born artist Toni Onley studied with Nicholson for a few years before emigrating to Canada. The bridge is one in a set of five of his works. The Isle of Man has been issuing its own stamps since 1973.

The old stone bridge across the Moselle at Remich Luxembourg painted by Nico Klopp (1894-1930) who lived in the area. I'm not sure if the bridge is still there, but I found an old postcard of it on the web. On the other side of the river lies the small town of Nennig; the region is known for its fine wines.

Tividar Csotvary-Kosztka (1853-1919) painted a storm scene at the Great Hortobagy bridge which crosses the river of the same name. He included a herd of those famous white cattle, a Hungarian herd dog and even riders hurrying home on the bridge. The bridge was built in 1833 and is also known as the nine-arched bridge. Hortobagy is now a national park and since 1999 a World Heritage landscape. (stamp 1973)

(Alexy, Thanks for the info! I have traveled the area and couldn't remember any old stone bridge. It probably didn't survive the war. I did, however, cross the Hortobagy bridge many years ago and also saw the white cattle. K.)

The chain bridge at Stádlec
May 26, 1999
Stádlec Chain Bridge is a chain suspension bridge. It was built in 1847 - 1848 spanning the Vltava, and was rebuilt at the present location on the River Lužnice in 1975. It is the only surviving Empire style chain bridge in Bohemia.

In 1907 Giovanni Giacometti (1868-1933), Swiss artist, painted the stone 'Bridge in the Sun' at Stampa in the Bregaglia valley close to the border to Italy. It crosses the river Mera and is still in use. Stampa was the home town of the Giacometti family; there is a Giacometti museum at the bridge.

The Karl Theodor Bridge, made of local red sandstone, crossing the river Neckar in Heidelberg has already appeared here, but I didn't find this version of 1996. The story of the monkey with the mirror on the bridge goes back to the 15th century. The new one, created in bronze by G. Rumpf, has been keeping Karl Theodor company there since 1979.

Hello Agmasd, I have tried to find more information about the stamp and the bridge of Lebanon, but it is not so easy. My stamp of 4p was issued in 1930, yours of 5p in 1940. The motif "The old Bridge over the Dog River" stayed the same until 1950. It is a sandstone bridge from the time of Sultan Selim but I found only the old post card from 1914 on the web, so I don't know if it is still standing. There is an interesting legend to go with the name Dog for the river. Do you have any more info?

The railroad bridge in Rendsburg crosses the shipping canal linking the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Since this part of Germany is very flat, the bridge needs 2.5 kilometers to acquire enough elevation up and down. It is the longest bridge of its kind in Germany, built in 1911-13. It carries a suspension ferry for cars, cyclists, etc. Note both D-mark and € denominations still in use in 2001.

The Town Hall of Bamberg sits on a tiny island in the river Regnitz. The 'Upper Bridge' connecting the island to town is over 500 years old; it has three arches, seen only behind the bushes in the photograph. St. Kunigunde in the foreground. In 1993 the historical center of town became a World Heritage site; it dates back to the 10th century.

Monaco issued a set of three "Save Venice" stamps in 1972. One of them features a detail of a painting by Canaletto (1697-1768) with the San Giovanni e Paolo Bridge; it is still there, next to the church of the same name. Today Venice is threatened by rising sea levels, among other things, more than ever.

The march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, drawn by Bernice Sims, commemorated that event in 1965 in the stamp of 2005. There are still many participants of that march who remember it very well. The bridge crosses the Alabama River in Selma and was finished in 1940 and named after a prominent member of the KKK. (Photograph by Carol Highsmith.)
