Carvalho Viaduct

Carvalho Viaduct: the railway's picture postcard view, approximately 84m in length built on masonry pillars set into the hillside itself. The passenger has the sensation of floating in space.

The old bridge at Lavertezzo in the Verzasca Valley in southern Switzerland can already be seen on page 25 in the photographic minisheet of last year. Walking across is only for those not bothered by heights because it has no railing and is quite uneven. The stamp depicted here is the older one dating from 1991 and belongs to the set of 4 designed by Pierre Baur.

(Hi, Alexey, Thanks for your Marchfeld bridge, one can see that it is not meant for heavy traffic. Hi, Jose, Welcome to the Community! The Kubitschek is so elegant - I admired it on page 26 and your photo adds perspective. Chan certainly deserved the prizes he won for it. Also like your railway bridges, although one might get a little dizzy up there. K.)

One of the most impressive bridges on the Simplon highway is the Ganter bridge. It took 4 years to build and was completed in 1980, work was impossible during winter months. The highest support measures 150 meters and the longest span 174 meters. Architect C. Menn. The stamp is another in the set designed by Pierre Baur. Photo looking up the Ganter valley.

Hi Bas, Seeing the bridge at the Eiffel tower brought back happy memories. It's a broad stone bridge built at the beginning of the 19th century and named Pont d'Iena at Napoleon's request, to celebrate his victory over the Prussians at Jena (way over in what is now the eastern part of Germany). Four cavalry warriors guard the ends of the bridge. Strolling along the Seine on a sunny day is just wonderful

The fourth stamp in the Swiss bridge set of 1991 shows the single-track, five-span railroad bridge crossing the River Aare as it joins the Rhine at Koblenz (CH). The bridge was built in the late 19th century and even has a footpath which is especially fun to use when waters are high in early spring.

(Hi Alexey, Beautiful Moscow bridge! K.)

The stamp issued by Czechoslovakia in 1967 for the stamp fair in Prag in 1968 shows the Ile de la Cite (looking up the river Seine) in Paris where the Philatec exhibit was held in 1964. At the bottom of the stamp the great Pont Neuf can barely be recognized. Pont Saint-Michel and Pont au double can also be seen. The others I'll leave up to you, but each has an interesting history!.

(Hi, Alexey, Minute, but the Pond d'Iena is indeed recognizable. The tribute to Decaris is such fun. K.)

In this view of Notre Dame, 1947, the Pont de l'archeveche is seen looking down river. You can see it on the right in the post above. The bridge is primarily for pedestrians and one of several in Paris weighed down by literally tons of 'love-locks'.

In this view of the il de la Cite (2014) the Pont des Arts is seen in the foreground, the Pont Neuf in the middle. The Pont des Arts is a pedestrian bridge with a wooden floor and is another one which used to be laden with 'love-locks'. Since a section of railing broke down under the weight of locks, they had to be removed and the railing now cannot be used for them. About 45 tons were removed.
