To me, it looks more like a water flour mill. Which were commonplace by then.

A water mill requires a much larger room for millstones and grain. I think that this is a small workshop with a water power, for example for sharpening

Plank bridges are still in use in the Alps today. The bridge depicted in the stamp (2007) plays a role in the children's story of Schellenursli who went up into the mountains in the winter to get the biggest cowbell (he knew it was kept at the summer pastures) for the village celebration. The story, written by Selina DiSalvo and illustrated by A. Carigiet, has even been made into a movie. Ursli's statue stands in Zuoz, Engadin. (Schellen = Cowbells. Can you imagine what the celebration sounds like?)

(About that odd waterwheel, I shall ask a few Swiss friends. K.)

If you continue down the Inn Valley from Zuoz you come to the border of Austria and soon to one of the few river crossings that have survived over the centuries. The tower of the bridge dates from 1472 and served as a guard and toll house at this gorge-like part of the valley. In the old Merian view (mid 17th century) one section of the bridge already has a roof. The water is almost white with sediment after heavy rains. Stamp design O. Zeiller, 1974; part of the "Beautiful Austria" series.

The Extern Stones are located in the Teutoburger Forest near Bielefeld. Two stones are connected by a tiny bridge. This rock formation has attracted people since prehistorical times; at the top of the higher rock there is an altar-like structure and the rays of the sun shine through a round hole in the morning of the summer solstice. The stamp (part of the series 'Sights to see' 1989) shows the stones from the forest side, the panorama shows them from the valley side.

The Reichsbrücke in Vienna was an important bridge for most traffic across the Danube. Built in the 1930s, it came crashing down on the 1st of August 1976. A new bridge was opened in 1980. In the stamp one sees a pleasure boat mooring very close to the bridge - that was also the case on that fateful day and almost caused a tragedy.

(Hi Alexey, A very good-looking mill, one with the water coming from the top. K.)

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the historic Old Iron Bridge in Spanish Town, spanning the Rio Cobre river, erected in 1801, printed by lithography, and issued by Jamaica in 1972, Scott No. 352, plus a photo.

The grand old Pont Neuf of Paris has been posted several times here but never wrapped! Christo and Jeanne-Claude carried out their idea with the skill of some 300+ workers in the late summer of 1985. It was the last of their major wrappings. Over 10 acres of a shiny golden material covered even the lamps. The photo shows a few of the monitors in blue overalls who watched and guarded the material. The installation lasted only two weeks. The stamp was issued in 2009, only a few months before Jeanne-Claude passed away.

(Hi Nethryk, It's always sad to see good-looking historical structures like the Old Iron Bridge go to disrepair. I hope they save it before it's too late. K.)

The minisheet issued by Czechoslovakia in 1982 honors the Danube as the river of peaceful cooperation between nations - today it passes through, or is a border to, 10 nations. The pleasure boat is passing beneath the Novy Most, now called the Bridge of the National Uprising, in Bratislava in the young nation of Slovakia. Built in 1967-72 it is one of the largest cable-stayed bridges with only one pylon in the world. At the top of the pylon there is a restaurant with a grand view. It is therefore also known as the bridge with the flying saucer!

(Quite close to where I live the Danube is only a small brook. K.)
