This 50 peseta airmail stamp (Sc #C146) was issued by Spain on September 6, 1955. It depicts Leonardo Torres y Quevedo (1852-1936), Spanish civil engineer and mathematician.  |

Here is the 9c value (Sc #453) from Guatemala's 1986-96 Miguel Angel Asturias Cultural Center definitive series. Stamp was issued on October 1, 1991. Miguel Angel Asturias (1899-1974) was a 1967 Nobel laureate in literature (Scott).  |

This August 9, 1979, 90 pf stamp (Mi #601) of Berlin commemorates the 250th anniversary of the birth of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786). From wikipedia, "Moses Mendelssohn was a German-Jewish philosopher to whose ideas the Haskalah, the 'Jewish Enlightenment' of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is indebted...Mendelssohn educated himself in German thought and literature and from his writings on philosophy and religion came to be regarded as a leading cultural figure of his time by both Christian and Jewish inhabitants of German-speaking Europe and beyond."  |

Here is the 2 pf Kaethe Kollwitz stamp (Mi #327 vb, 327 va) from the DDR's 1952 "Personalities" definitive series. The stamp varies in appearance, depending on the printer. The stamp on the left was printed by Graphische Werkstaetten Leipzig, and the one on the right by Deutsche Wertpapierdruckerei (Michel).  |
